The Top 100 ‘Pictures of the Day’ for 2014

At the end of every quarter the Sifter highlights the top 25 ‘Pictures of the Day‘, culminating in an epic Top 100 at the end of the year (see last year’s top 100 here).

It’s been an eventful year and I can’t wait to see what treasures next year will bring! Below you will find the final instalment of this quarterly compilation. All credit belongs to the individual photographers and their inspiring visions of our beautiful planet.

For more information on any individual photograph, click the title or image to be taken to the original post.

*Please note the photographs themselves were not necessarily taken in 2014, they just happened to be featured as a POTD on TwistedSifter. The pictures are also listed in reverse chronological order. There is no ranking amongst the photos

Photographers in Love Do the Same Embrace Wherever They Go

It all started in 2010 when commercial photography team Kendrick Brinson and David Walter Banks were at the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada with friends. The couple, dating at the time, jumped into each other’s arms for an embrace and one of their friends captured the moment.

The couple loved the pic and decided to recreate it a couple of months later while on location for a commercial shoot. They’ve been recreating the moment ever since and the loving couple even got married in 2012! The duo is now based in Los Angeles and available for commercial work. You can find out more at the links below.

15 Reasons Why You Will Never Regret Sleeping in a Tent

“I’ve never crawled out through a tent door and not had an incredible day.”

Those were the words of Cort Muller who took the first photo seen below. Sure it can rain, the ground can be hard and the temperature can drop, but when you wake up to views like these, it makes it all worthwhile. A toast to adventure! Cheers 🙂

Here’s to the Shopkeepers Around the World

A toast to small business owners around the world!

The Guardians is an ongoing photo series by French photographer Vladimir Antaki, who says the project was born from his desire to, “document and pay tribute to these people, these guardians of urban temples that we meet everyday without really noticing.”

On his Behance project page, Antaki explains:

These places are sometimes magical, overloaded with elements, colours and stories, guarded by these characters who are sometimes touching, funny, quirky, and at times frightening. People pay less and less attention to their environment. They are always in a hurry, they don’t take the time to spend time with one another. Unfortunately, these places will one day no longer be around. This is one of the reasons that compelled me to want to document these ‘guardians’. So far, I’ve visited 9 cities (Montreal, New York, Las Vegas, Paris, Vienna, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Beirut) and met nearly 250 Guardians.

You can find the entire series on Behance and also follow the latest on Facebook, Twitter and the official website.

17 Satellite Photos Around the World that Will Change Your Perspective

The Overview Effect is a cognitive shift in awareness reported by some astronauts and cosmonauts during spaceflight, often while viewing the Earth from orbit or from the lunar surface. From this perspective, pattens in nature and human development emerge and you see the world in an entirely different light.

Daily Overview is a new project that was inspired by the Overview Effect. Each day they provide a new satellite image of our planet in an attempt to, “fully appreciate the beauty and intricacy of the things we’ve constructed, the sheer complexity of the systems we’ve developed, or the devastating impact that we’ve had on our planet.”

Using satellite imagery from Apple Maps (powered by DigitalGlobe), Daily Overview has already amassed a fantastic archive. To see the latest, check them out at the links below.

15 Striking Portraits of Ancient Tribes Around the World

ladakhi by jimmy nelson before they pass away photo project

Ladakhi – Photograph by Jimmy Nelson

In 2009, photographer Jimmy Nelson set out on a journey to document the ‘world’s last indigenous cultures’. Using a 4×5 camera, Nelson took an amazing series of portraits, featuring 31 ancient tribes around the world.

The project, entitled Before They Pass Away, culminated with an elegant hardcover book (available in three versions) featuring stories of his encounters and nearly 500 photos.

The series has also led to a number of speaking engagements and exhibits around the world. See here for a list of upcoming events.

On the project website, beforethey.com, you will find many additional pictures of each tribe along with information about Nelson’s experience photographing each.

The project has also received some criticism. Most notably from Tim McLaughlin and Elissa Washuta. Nelson even responded to McLaughlin’s critical review of the project here.

The dialogue in the articles above are valuable and the fact that Nelson responded to the criticism provides an intriguing conversation around the topic. I encourage you to read them and derive your own conclusions.

For the latest from Before They Pass Away, you can find more information at the links below.

27 Reasons Why You Should ALWAYS Ask for the Window Seat

There are plenty of reasons to ask for a window seat. For starters you can lean on the window if you want to sleep, and you never have to get up for someone else! Girlfriend Continues to Lead Photographer Around the World

Like so many creative projects, Follow me / #followmeto began rather serendipitously. Photographer Murad Osmann and his partner Nataly Zakharova are passionate travellers but Nataly was growing frustrated with Murad always being preoccupied with his camera wherever they went. She literally resorted to dragging him by hand from place to place to keep them moving.

It was that perspective of Murad being led by Nataly that inspired the ongoing photo series that has exploded in popularity on Instagram, Facebook and Google+.

We first featured the wanderlust couple back in March. Since then the two have continued to visit amazing places around the globe, inspiring travellers and photographers to capture the world around us in a fresh and creative way.
