An Abandoned School in Detroit – Now and Then

Through photography, detroiturbex.com seeks to raise awareness of the social and economic challenges facing the city of Detroit. Over the course of 100 years the population level has rapidly expanded and contracted. In the 1950s the population was approximately 1.85 million, in 2010, it was 713,000.

The recent contraction means many of the buildings that were erected to support the rapid growth are now vacant and abandoned. The infrastructure was built to handle a population of 2 million. Only a third of that currently resides in Detroit.

In a fascinating series entitled Cass Tech – Now and Then, detroiturbex has created a 43-picture gallery of old photos and found the exact location of where they were taken and made a composite of the past and present.

While the original Cass Tech was left abandoned for some time, a new Cass Technical High School was built in 2004 in an adjacent lot to the north of the original building. According to Wikipedia, the original building was demolished in July of 2011.

25 Death-Defying Photos by Vadim Makhorov

South Bridge, Kiev | Photograph by Vadim Mahorov @ dedmaxopka.livejournal.com

Russian photographer Vadim Mahorov goes to death-defying heights for the perfect shot. While the thrill of scaling buildings, towers and monuments is part of the allure, the dramatic aerial landscapes Vadim captures are absolutely breathtaking. Although many are quick to lump Vadim with other youths simply looking for the rush of infiltrating places they shouldn’t be, Vadim shows a clear passion for photography.

Some of the images below show the dizzying heights he and his friends scale, while other shots show the beautiful scenes he captures from his unique vantage points not many photographers will ever reach. This gives his work a unique perspective of cities around Russia. Vadim runs a very active blog at dedmaxopka.livejournal.com where he shares all of his work and travels. All of the images are full screen and it’s inspiring to see his photography skills develop over the last few years.

Please enjoy the selection below that are being shown with permission on the Sifter. Keep up the amazing work Vadim, and be careful!

The Ruins of Detroit

Parisian photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre took a trip to Detroit to capture the urban decay of a once thriving city. In their book The Ruins of Detroit, Yves and Romain photograph abandoned buildings, offering a chilling look into a city in decline.

The Ruins of Detroit
Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre

Ruins are the visible symbols and landmarks of our societies
and their changes, small pieces of history in suspension.

The state of ruin is essentially a temporary situation that happens at
some point, the volatile result of change of era and the fall of empires.
This fragility, the time elapsed but even so running fast, lead us to watch them one very last time :
being dismayed, or admire, making us wondering about the permanence of things.

Photography appeared to us as a modest way
to keep a little bit of this ephemeral state.
