90-Year-Old Woman Chooses Epic Road Trip With Family Over Cancer Treatment

She told her doc, “I’m 90-years-old, I’m hitting the road”

90-Year-Old Woman Chooses Epic Road Trip With Family Over Cancer Treatment (12)

In July of 2015, 90-year-old Norma’s husband, Leo, passed away; they had been together for 67 years. During that same period, Norma was diagnosed with uterine cancer and given her treatment options. She told her doc: “I’m 90-years-old, I’m hitting the road.”

In late August, Norma took off with her son and his wife in their RV. Norma and the retired couple hit the road on an indefinite road trip across the United States and have been documenting their uplifting journey on a Facebook page called, Driving Miss Norma.

The threesome are still exploring the US and you can see photos from their journey below, along with a recount of Norma’s story that was published on Facebook last September.

90-Year-Old Woman Chooses Epic Road Trip With Family Over Cancer Treatment (5)

For many years Norma and Leo would listen to Paul Harvey’s “The Rest of the Story” at lunch time in their humble home in northern Michigan. Now, this is the rest of her story…

90-Year-Old Woman Chooses Epic Road Trip With Family Over Cancer Treatment (11)

During the same two-week period, her husband, Leo, was dying, Norma, was traveling through her own medical maze. Having some blood detected in her urine during a routine exam, she was sent for an ultrasound, then another. The day after Leo was admitted to Hospice we learned that she had a large, likely cancerous mass on her uterus. Two days after Leo died we found ourselves sitting in an OB/GYN office talking about treatment options.

You know the drill: surgery, then radiation and chemo in some order. When the doctor was finished he asked her how she would like to proceed.

90-Year-Old Woman Chooses Epic Road Trip With Family Over Cancer Treatment (6)

You know the drill: surgery, then radiation and chemo in some order. When the doctor was finished he asked her how she would like to proceed. A tiny woman at 101 pounds and under five-feet tall, an exhausted Norma looked the young doctor dead in the eye and with the strongest voice she could muster, said, “I’m 90-years-old, I’m hitting the road.”

The doc and the confused first-day medical student who was shadowing him looked at Tim (her son) and me (her daughter-in-law, Ramie) for some clarification.

90-Year-Old Woman Chooses Epic Road Trip With Family Over Cancer Treatment (4)

We had time to talk to Norma beforehand about the likelihood that there would be some bad news coming from the doctor. She made it VERY clear to us that she had no interest in any treatment. We “got it” and were in complete support of her decision.

90-Year-Old Woman Chooses Epic Road Trip With Family Over Cancer Treatment (7)

But what next? We couldn’t imagine leaving her in a nursing home, especially after walking down the long halls of the local Tender Care to visit Leo in the last room on the right, reserved by Hospice, for the dying. No way. There is also no way she could live at home alone without Leo. They were truly a well-oiled team of 67 years.

90-Year-Old Woman Chooses Epic Road Trip With Family Over Cancer Treatment (13)

Having recently read Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande (please put this on your reading list) our best idea was to take her on the road with us. Norma currently is not in pain, her mind is sharp, she loves to travel, and she is remarkably easy to be around.

90-Year-Old Woman Chooses Epic Road Trip With Family Over Cancer Treatment (2)

We explained to the well-meaning doctor and his student that we live in an RV and that we will be taking her wherever she wants to go. He didn’t hesitate to say, “RIGHT ON!” We asked if he thought us irresponsible for this approach. His reply was telling.

90-Year-Old Woman Chooses Epic Road Trip With Family Over Cancer Treatment (15)

“As doctors,” he said, “we see what cancer treatment looks like every day. ICU, nursing homes, awful side effects and honestly, there is no guarantee she will survive the initial surgery to remove the mass. You are doing exactly what I would want to do in this situation. Have a fantastic trip!”

90-Year-Old Woman Chooses Epic Road Trip With Family Over Cancer Treatment (3)

Meanwhile, the medical student stood discreetly next to the exam room door taking it all in. Until that point she had spent her first day working with pregnant women — the waiting room was filled with them — all thinking about the beginning of life, not the end. The look on her face during our conversation indicated she had just received the education of a lifetime.

Local Hound Dog Runs Half Marathon, Finishes in 7th Place

Ludivine is a two-and-a-half-year-old bloodhound and local fixture in the 500-person town of Elkmont, Alabama. The free-roaming hound has been making headlines after sneaking out of her backyard and completing the town’s inaugural half-marathon in an impressive time of 1:32:56, good enough for seventh place!

Her owner, April Hamlin, didn’t even realize Ludivine had left the yard until friends who were volunteering at the race texted her photos of her dog at the finish line.

“All I did was open the door, and she ran the race on her own accord. My first reaction was that I was embarrassed and worried that she had possibly gotten in the way of the other runners. She’s laid back and friendly, so I can’t believe she ran the whole half marathon because she’s actually really lazy!”
April Hamlin, Runner’s World

Tim Horvath (above), 49, ran most of the race with the pup, telling Runner’s World that he first saw her in the parking lot before the race.

Tim says she followed him for most of the run, stopping to periodically romp through streams and yards as well as sniff other animals.

“One time she went over and met another dog next to the course. Later on, she went into a field with some mules and cows. Then she’d come back and run around our legs.”

Ludivine was awarded a medal for her amazing feat and next year’s race has already been renamed the Elkmont’s Hound Dog Half, which will be held on January 21, 2017.

According to Canadian Running, The Elkmont Half-Marathon (Trackless Train Trek) had 165 finishers (plus Ludivine) with proceeds of the race going to the cross-country and track and field teams of the local Elkmont High School to help purchase training equipment and cover race entry fees for students.

Remote Train Station in Japan Remains Open So Student Can Go to School

The station will remain open until March when the high school girl is expected to graduate

Remote Train Station in Japan Remains Open So Student Can Go to School (2)

At the remote Kyu-Shirataki train station in Hokkaido, Japan you will find only one regular passenger; a high-school girl going to and from class.

Japan Railways, which runs the line, has committed to continue operating the line until March, when the fiscal year ends and the student is expected to graduate.

Remote Train Station in Japan Remains Open So Student Can Go to School (4)

According to CityLab:

Ridership at the Kyu-Shirataki station and a few neighboring ones had dramatically fallen because of the remote location, and freight service had ended there as well. But students depend on the train for transit, and parents asked that the company keep the station open for their children.

Japan’s impressively efficient high-speed rails have continued to expand to the outskirts of the country, rendering many of Japan’s older, low-tech railways obsolete. Kyu-Shirataki station, for example, sits in the town of Engaru in a rural part of Hokkaido, which lost at least 20 rail lines in the past few decades. [source]

How One Artist Turned His Viral Reddit Post Into a Book Deal

When opportunity knocks, you have to seize the moment.

movie title typos by austin light (1)

It all started last November when artist Austin Light uploaded an album of illustrations he had made based on ‘movie title typos’.

The concept was simple: remove one letter from a movie title, and write a brief synopsis of what the new movie was about.

The original thread became a popular post on reddit and Light decided to turn the best submissions into illustrated movie posters as a kind of ‘draw one thing a day’ project.

movie title typos by austin light (2)

A few hours later, Austin’s submission reached the top of reddit’s front page not once, but twice!

It was only a matter of time before publications began to pick up the trending story. TwistedSifter did a post and it was one of our most popular posts of 2014!

movie title typos by austin light (4)

Television shows followed with coverage shortly thereafter…

movie title typos by austin light (5)

Even celebrities started to share Austin’s illustrations! (ps. check out the link Molly Ringwald shared, it’s the Sifter post!)

This next step was CRITICAL. Austin was riding a wave of popularity that artists can only dream of. BUT instead of just enjoying the ride, he SEIZED the moment and used the attention as an opportunity to try to fulfil a lifelong dream.

He sent an email to the open submissions page on the Chronicle Books website. Something to the effect of: “Hey look how popular this thing I made is. It would make for a great book!”

Chronicle Books agreed and now Austin had to turn his sketchbook drawings into a book that would bear his name. So he started to draw…

His wife uploaded the touching photo below with the following caption:

I’ve known this man almost longer than I haven’t. I’ve seen him have every range of emotion possible but this moment will stand out. This moment is pride. This is “I did it”. All of you experienced a part of the excitement of #movietitletypos but few saw the years of work leading up to it. Austin, on his 31st birthday, got to hold his first published book and it was as wonderful as I always imagined. #proudwife

Guy Proposes With the Most Romantic Custom Monopoly Board Ever

When Justin Lebon decided to propose to his girlfriend he knew he wanted two things: for it to be a surprise and for it to be special.

When Justin Lebon decided to propose to his girlfriend he knew he wanted two things: for it to be a surprise and to be special.

To surprise her he decided to propose on a day she would never expect—Christmas! And to make it special, he decided to make a custom version of her favourite boardgame—Monopoly.

Lebon designed a custom board that charted the journey of their relationship, highlighting special memories along the way. He also reached out his friend Mark Becker of Old Redwood to help build a gorgeous, oversized Monopoly board out of wood.

Below you will find highlights of the amazing board along with a brief overview of the significance of each ‘property’ including the secret compartment Becker built to conceal the ring.

Flower Power: Adorable Portraits of Pit Bulls Waiting to Be Adopted

According to the ASPCA 1.2 million dogs are euthanized in the US each year. Sadly, pit bulls make up a notable percentage due to their unfair reputation.

According to the ASPCA, approximately 1.2 million dogs are euthanized in the United States each year. Sadly, pit bulls make up a notable percentage of them due to their unfair reputation as a scary and dangerous breed.

Photographer Sophie Gamund wants to change that perception in an ongoing series entitled, Flower Power: Pit Bulls of the Revolution. Since starting the project last summer, Gamund has photographed over 150 pit bulls in shelters across the US, adorning them with homemade flower crowns to ‘infuse a softer energy into their imagery’.

To date, 114 of the pit bulls Gamund has photographed have been adopted but there are still many more still hoping to find a forever home. I’ve included a gallery of pit bulls below still waiting to be adopted. Each ‘adopt’ link beneath each dog will take you directly to the dog’s adoption agency.

A 2016 calendar is also available along with prints and posters.

You can find an ongoing and updated (adopted/still available) list of pit bulls Gamund has photographed on her website.

Father of the Bride Grabs Stepfather So He Can Also Walk Down the Aisle

He stopped the procession so they could both walk her down the aisle together.

Wedding photographer Delia D. Blackburn captured one of the most heartfelt wedding moments of the year when she shared a series of photo that show father of the Bride, Todd Bachman, stopping the wedding procession to grab his daughter’s stepfather Todd, so he could join them in walking ‘their’ daughter Brittany down the aisle.

Delia recounts:

“Grab tissues… because you will need it as you look through these pictures. Todd Bachman, father of the bride, brought his daughter to the beginning of the aisle…he stopped the procession while people were confused at his actions and he walked up to his daughter’s stepfather. Todd reached out his hand and grabbed Brittany’s stepfather and pulled him down the aisle to walk their daughter down the aisle together. NOT A DRY EYE at the ceremony..including me! Families are what we make them…make it about your kids and not your ego. Congratulations Todd Bachman on showing your kids what true love really is…love for your children. Please share so that we can spread kindness throughout! [source]

Students at Alan Shepard Elementary School in Bourbonnais, Illinois wait patiently to have their yearbook signed by Steve “Mr. Steve” Weidner, the school’s long-time custodian.

“He pays attention to the kids… he knows who they are,” Principal Shirley Padera said about Weidner. “The kids know if anything happens, Mr. Steve is going to take care of it.”

According to Yahoo, Mr. Steve signed all 104 of the second graders’ yearbooks in addition to 200 more from other classes.

“He [Mr. Steve] has good relationships with the students,” Principal Padera adds. “Many of our children remain in the building for 5 years because our grade levels are kindergarten through 4th grade. They have many opportunities to interact with Mr. Steve.”
