Mesmerizing Tape Art Installations by Darel Carey

The artist uses strips of black electrical tape to create an illusion of dimension

In an ongoing series of installations, LA-based visual artist Darel Carey uses strips of black electrical tape in line sequences of varied configurations to create an illusion of dimension.

In the timelapse sequences embedded below you can get a feel for the meditative and time-consuming nature of Carey’s work. On a recent Facebook post, Carey reflects:

People sometimes ask me why I take the time to tape individual lines when I can just create a wallpaper, or paint a projection. There are many reasons to me, just to name a few:
– I enjoy the organic process of how the lines shape the space in ways I can’t always predict
– it would change the context of what I’m doing (although not with this work, I can conceive of situations where I might use wallpaper in an art installation)
– it’s meditative, and exciting to anticipate how the final installation will look and feel
– it’s more interesting, so why not?

Below you will find stills and timelapses of Carey’s tape art installations. For more, be sure to check him out at the links below.

This Was Made from Multiple Layers of Precision Cut Packing Tape

Amsterdam-based artist Max Zorn places multiple layers of brown packing tape on acrylic glass sheets. The more layers of tape he uses, the darker the shades become. He then uses an X-Acto knife to cut and shape the various layers. However, it’s not until a light source (like a lamp, light box or sunlight) is activated that the artworks come to life and truly take form.

Zorn says the idea to use packing tape began with his street art:

“There’s a lot of great street art by day, but it disappears after dark. I wanted to come up with urban art that uses nighttime as a setting, and there was nothing more inviting than the street lamps in Amsterdam. In the beginning I used packing tape to fill in larger sections of my marker drawings. Once I hung them on street lamps, the light’s effect opened up new ideas with ditching markers and just using tape.” [source]

Below you will find a selection of Zorn’s amazing work (with many available to purchase through his website). To keep up with the latest from Max, be sure to check him out at the links below.

Mark Khaisman Makes Art with Everyday Packing Tape

mark-khaisman-artist-packaging-tape-portraits

Born in 1958 in Kiev, Ukraine, artist Mark Khaisman studied Art and Architecture at the Moscow Architectural Institute in Russia. Now living in Philadelphia, USA, Khaisman uses rolls of brown packaging tape to create incredible works of art.

Mark characterizes his work as ‘pictorial illusions formed by light and shadow’. The three key elements are: translucent packing tape, clear acrylic or film panels, and light. By superimposing layers of packaging tape Mark can ‘play on degrees of opacity that produces transparencies highlighted by the color, shading, and embossment’.

As for why he elects to use basic packing tape as his preferred medium, Khaisman explains:

“There are some qualities of tape that make it unique for me as an art material: its banality, humbleness and its ‘throwaway’ nature; its default settings of color and width; its unforgiving translucency; the cold and impersonal attitude that tape surface suggests.”

Below you will find a small sample of Khaisman’s fascinating artwork. You can find much more on his official website. If you’re interested in purchasing his works, Mark is represented by the galleries listed below.
