Photos of Museum Paintings Taking Selfies

Museum of Selfies is a fun art project started by Olivia Muus that shows people in portrait paintings about to take a selfie. Muus explains:

“This is a project that started when my friend aka. right hand and I went to the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen. I took a picture for fun and liked how this simple thing could change their character and give their facial expression a whole new meaning.”

Muus has since started a tumblr page where others can submit their own #museumofselfies. Below are my personal favourites to date.

Picture of the Day: The 271 Million Mile Selfie

Rosetta_mission_selfie_at_comet

Seen here is a spacecraft selfie taken by the Rosetta space probe some 271 million miles (436 million km) away from Earth and about 50 km away from the 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko comet. The image was taken on 7 September 2014 and captures the side of the Rosetta spacecraft and one of Rosetta’s 14 m-long solar wings, with 67P/C-G in the background. Two images with different exposure times were combined to bring out the faint details in this very high contrast situation. [source]

Churyumov-Gerasimenko is the destination of the European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission, launched on 2 March 2004. The Rosetta spacecraft rendezvoused with the comet on 6 August 2014 and entered orbit on 10 September 2014. Rosetta’s lander, Philae, is scheduled to land on the comet’s surface on 11 November 2014.

The Rosetta mission will achieve many historic firsts:

– Rosetta will be the first spacecraft to orbit a comet’s nucleus
– It will be the first spacecraft to fly alongside a comet as it heads towards the inner Solar System
– Rosetta will be the first spacecraft to examine from close proximity how a frozen comet is transformed by the warmth of the Sun
– Shortly after its arrival at Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, the Rosetta orbiter will despatch a robotic lander for the first controlled touchdown on a comet nucleus
– The Rosetta lander’s instruments will obtain the first images from a comet’s surface and make the first in situ analysis to find out what it is made of
– On its way to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, Rosetta will pass through the main asteroid belt, with the option to be the first European close encounter with one or more of these primitive objects
– Rosetta will be the first spacecraft ever to fly close to Jupiter’s orbit using solar cells as its main power source
– Scientists will be eagerly waiting to compare Rosetta’s results with previous studies by ESA’s Giotto spacecraft and by ground-based observatories. These have shown that comets contain complex organic molecules – compounds that are rich in carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen

Intriguingly, these are the elements which make up nucleic acids and amino acids, the essential ingredients for life as we know it. Did life on Earth begin with the help of comet seeding? Rosetta may help us to find the answer to this fundamental question. [source]

This Guy Set Up His Camera To Make it Look Like Statues Taking Selfies

On a recent trip to the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork, Ireland, reddit user Jazsus_ur_lookin_well came up with a fun photo series by setting up his camera to make it look like statues were taking selfies.

Aside from the staff giving you weird looks, it’s a funny way to bridge the past with the present.

Picture of the Day: The First Space Selfie, 1966

In a tweet last month, astronaut Buzz Aldrin informed the world that he was responsible for taking the first ever selfie in space during the Gemini 12 mission in 1966. The mission took place from November 11-15 lasting 3 days, 22 hours and 34 minutes. The two-man crew included Aldrin and James Lovell Jr.

The mission was Aldrin’s first spaceflight. He would later become the second person to ever walk on the moon after Neil Armstrong on 21 July 1969.

Last week two fighter jets escorted the Netherlands’ first commercial Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The country’s first Dreamliner was welcomed by two F-16’s from the Royal Netherlands Air Force Demo Team. The plane is owned and operated by Arkefly, the Dutch charter arm of TUI.

The RNLAF F-16 Demo Team 2014-2015 is based at Leeuwarden Airbase. The home base of the RNLAF F-16 Demo Team shifts between Volkel and Leeuwarden Airbase every two years. The RNLAF F-16 Demo Team 2014-2015 is comprised of personnel from the 323 and 322 Squadrons. The team consists of one display pilot, four display coaches, eight technical specialists and a webmaster. Captain Jeroen “Slick” Dickens is flying his first season as the display pilot for the RNLAF F-16 Demo Team.

During a visit to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro; Lee Thompson, founder of the Flash Pack travel company, was granted permission by the Brazilian tourist board to scale to the top of the statue for the ultimate selfie. The statue was under repair after a lightning storm and it took Thompson 25 minutes to climb to the top (through a set of narrow steps inside).

Cristo Redentor (Eng: Christ the Redeemer) is a statue of Jesus of Nazareth in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; considered the largest Art Deco statue in the world and the 5th largest statue of Jesus in the world. It is 39.6 metres (130 ft) tall, including its 9.5 metres (31 ft) pedestal, and 30 metres (98 ft) wide. It weighs 635 tonnes (625 long,700 short tons), and is located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. The iconic statue is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, and was constructed between 1922 and 1931. [source]

On a recent trip to Dubai, rooftopper and photographer Alexander Remnev took this dizzying self-portrait from the top of the Princess Tower, the tallest residential building in the world. The Princess Tower is 101-storeys and stands 414 meters (1,358 ft) tall.

The nineteen-year-old photographer, who was on holiday with friends, explored as many rooftops as he could. You can see the complete photo series on his LiveJournal blog.

Picture of the Day: Colin Powell’s 60-Year-Old Selfie

COLIN POWELL’S 60-YEAR-OLD SELFIE

colin-powell-selfie-vintage

For Throwback Thursday, Colin Powell shared a self-proclaimed 60-year-old selfie on his Facebook page. He even called out Ellen DeGeneres!

“Throwback Thursday – I was doing selfies 60 years before you Facebook folks. Eat your heart out Ellen!”

The picture quickly went viral and the original Facebook post alone has over 106,000 Likes and 27,000 shares.

Colin Powell (born April 5, 1937) is a retired four-star general in the United States Army. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State, serving under U.S. President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005, the first African American to serve in that position.

During his military career, Powell also served as National Security Advisor (1987–1989), as Commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command (1989) and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989–1993), holding the latter position during the Persian Gulf War. He was the first, and so far the only, African American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and was the first of two consecutive African American office-holders to hold the key Administration position of U.S. Secretary of State.
