On a recent trip to Dubai, rooftopper and photographer Alexander Remnev took this dizzying self-portrait from the top of the Princess Tower, the tallest residential building in the world. The Princess Tower is 101-storeys and stands 414 meters (1,358 ft) tall.

The nineteen-year-old photographer, who was on holiday with friends, explored as many rooftops as he could. You can see the complete photo series on his LiveJournal blog.

SOARING WITH EAGLES

In this breathtaking capture by Alex Shaw, we see fellow photographer and urban explorer Lucinda Grange, atop one of the famous eagles that peer out from the 61st floor of the Chrysler Building in New York City.

The photo was included in a recent photo series attributed to Lucinda that has gone viral in the last couple days (see here, here, here and here), however it was Shaw that took this specific photo.

The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco style skyscraper on the east side of Manhattan. At 1,046 feet (319 m), the structure was the world’s tallest building for 11 months before it was surpassed by the Empire State Building in 1931. It is still the tallest brick building in the world, albeit with an internal steel skeleton. It was designed by architect William Van Alen. [source]

The Crazy Duo that Scaled the World’s 2nd Tallest Building also Took some Amazing Photos

Vadim Makhorov and Vitaliy Raskalov have gained a lot of notoriety with the video above this week (posted yesterday on the Sifter).

The video, released on Wednesday February 12, 2014, has already been viewed over 8 million times. It shows the duo (who together are OnTheRoofs), climbing the still under-construction Shanghai Tower. Upon its completion in 2014, it will stand approximately 632 metres (2,073 ft) high and will have 121 storeys. Following its topping out on 3 August 2013, it became the tallest building in China and the second-tallest in the world, surpassed only by the Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates.

Raskalov says the pair started their ascent on January 31st, which not coincidentally was the first day of China’s Lunar New Year, a major holiday in China. It took them about two hours to get to the 120th floor by foot and then they spent an additional 18 hours on top of the building sleeping and waiting for better weather.

While the video above documents their ascent, both are keen photographers and took the time to capture some amazing shots of the bustling metropolis below. To see the rest, visit their respective blogs here and here.

Exploring Dubai from the Rooftops of Buildings

If you’re interested in urban exploration, rooftopping, cityscapes and/or industrial architecture, the Sifter highly recommends the LiveJournal blog of Vadim Makhorov. Vadim is a talented photographer with a knack for finding vantage points of cities that most people will never experience.

That is because him and his friends will ascend tall buildings and structures (sometimes illegally) to get unique views of cities. The Sifter has already featured Vadim’s incredible work before. Him and his friends also gained quite a bit of notoriety earlier this year after illegally scaling one of the pyramids in Giza, Egypt.

Back in March, Vadim took a trip to Dubai with some friends. In an epic 60-photo blog post, Vadim shared his incredible perspective of Dubai with the world. I’ve posted a few of my personal favourites below, but be sure to head to the original post to see all of them.

Don’t Look at these Photos if you’re Scared of Heights

Mustang Wanted is a daredevil athlete from Kiev, Ukraine. On his website he releases heart-stopping photos and videos of himself climbing and hanging off of extremely high surfaces without the use of ropes or safety harnesses. The activity has become known as rooftopping or skywalking, a blend of death-defying stunts and photography that has produced some very dramatic results.

To keep up to date with the latest from Mustang Wanted, check him out at the links below.

*Please note this is an extremely dangerous activity and one that should not be attempted unless you fully understand the risks and skills required for such an activity

Picture of the Day: The Edge of Insanity

THE EDGE OF INSANITY

looking-down-from-top-of-burj-khalifa

Earlier this week, internationally acclaimed photographer Joe McNally posted a heart-stopping photo to Instagram, saying:

“My old battered shoes climbed the worlds tallest building today. What an amazing structure! Tweeting from 820 meters straight up!”

The photograph was taken well above the observation deck (located on the 124th floor), this is literally the highest point on the planet a person can be, on a man-made structure.

Joe McNally’s career has spanned over 30 years with assignments in over 50 countries. He has shot cover stories for TIME, Newsweek, Fortune and The New York Times; been a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated, a staff photographer at LIFE and a 23-year (still ongoing) contributor to National Geographic. He’s fairly prolific on Twitter, and you can also find him online at his Blog, Facebook, Google+ and YouTube.

At 829.9 meters (2,722 ft), the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is the tallest man-made structure in the world. Check out this list of records it holds:

– Tallest existing structure: 829.8 m (2,722 ft) (previously KVLY-TV mast – 628.8 m/2,063 ft)
– Tallest structure ever built: 829.8 m (2,722 ft) (previously Warsaw radio mast – 646.38 m/2,121 ft)
– Tallest freestanding structure: 829.8 m (2,722 ft) (previously CN Tower – 553.3 m/1,815 ft)
– Tallest skyscraper (to top of spire): 829.8 m (2,722 ft) (previously Taipei 101 – 509.2 m/1,671 ft)
– Tallest skyscraper to top of antenna: 829.8 m (2,722 ft) (previously the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower – 527 m/1,729 ft)
– Building with most floors: 163 (previously Willis (formerly Sears) Tower – 108)[20]
– Building with world’s highest occupied floor : 584.5 m (1,918 ft)
– World’s highest elevator installation (situated inside a rod at the very top of the building)
– World’s longest travel distance elevators
– Highest vertical concrete pumping (for a building): 606 m (1,988 ft)
– First world’s tallest structure to include residential space
– World’s highest installation of an aluminium and glass façade: 512 m (1,680 ft)
– World’s highest nightclub: 144th floor
– World’s highest restaurant (At.mosphere): 122nd floor at 442 m (1,450 ft) (previously 360, at a height of 350 m/1,148 ft in CN Tower)[30][31]
– World’s highest New Year display of fireworks.

Dramatic Rooftopping Captures by Aurelie Curie

Aurelie Curie is an urban and industrial photographer. On Flickr she has an incredible photostream of urban exploration (or Urbex) and rooftopping photos. ‘Rooftopping’ is a niche of Urban Exploration that involves scaling the roofs of tall buildings (usually without permission).

In the series below you can see the dramatic photos that can result from such daring activities. Be sure to check out Aurelie’s website and Flickr page for more fantastic work.

25 Death-Defying Photos by Vadim Makhorov

South Bridge, Kiev | Photograph by Vadim Mahorov @ dedmaxopka.livejournal.com

Russian photographer Vadim Mahorov goes to death-defying heights for the perfect shot. While the thrill of scaling buildings, towers and monuments is part of the allure, the dramatic aerial landscapes Vadim captures are absolutely breathtaking. Although many are quick to lump Vadim with other youths simply looking for the rush of infiltrating places they shouldn’t be, Vadim shows a clear passion for photography.

Some of the images below show the dizzying heights he and his friends scale, while other shots show the beautiful scenes he captures from his unique vantage points not many photographers will ever reach. This gives his work a unique perspective of cities around Russia. Vadim runs a very active blog at dedmaxopka.livejournal.com where he shares all of his work and travels. All of the images are full screen and it’s inspiring to see his photography skills develop over the last few years.

Please enjoy the selection below that are being shown with permission on the Sifter. Keep up the amazing work Vadim, and be careful!
