Dog Can’t Stop Smiling After Being Adopted

‘Meatball’ aka Meaty can’t stop melting hearts and making friends with his giant smile

When Lisa Reilly first saw a picture of ‘Meatball’ aka Meaty online, she got this feeling that he was ‘the one’. In an online essay, Reilly recalls:

“My senior bully had passed away 3 months prior and I had the exact same feeling when I adopted him at 10 years old, so I knew this dog was meant to be his predecessor.”

Meaty was adopted from Fresno Bully Rescue and lives happily with Lisa, her fiance, Punky and Ricardo (two other rescued pit bulls) and dachshunds Bitty and Dappe.

The smiling canine has been melting hearts and making friends online, amassing an amazing 46,000+ followers on Instagram. For more Meaty goodness follow @loveabulllisa

This Guy Rescues Stray Dogs and Takes Them on Weekly Train Rides Around Town

80-year-old Forth Worth, Texas resident, Eugene Bostick, is a good soul. Thank you sir

Guy Rescues Stray Dogs and Takes Them on Weekly Train Rides Around Town (2)

Eugene Bostick is a retired farmer from Fort Worth, Texas. According to The Dodo, the 80-year-old shares a farm with his brother and says people tend to abandon dogs on their property because they live at the end of a dead-end street.

Bostick says him and his brother were heart-broken by this and started to feed the abandon animals, taking caring of them, getting them spayed and neutered and providing a place for them to live.

Bostick says he’s currently taking care of nine dogs. They can roam free on his property but thought it would be nice to take them around to explore other parts of town. As an 80-year-old, walking nine dogs felt daunting so he fashioned a doggy train and drives them around with his tractor a couple of times a week. Bostick tells The Dodo:

“Whenever they hear me hooking the tractor up to it, man, they get so excited. They all come running and jump in on their own. They’re ready to go.”

You stay awesome Mr. Bostick, the Sifter salutes you.

If it wasn’t for the photos this story would be hard to believe. A would-be thief attempting to steal a mountain bike from a rack outside a Walmart in southern Oregon was chased down by a man on a horse and lassoed until police arrived to arrest the individual.

The incident took place in a Walmart parking lot in Eagle Point, a small town about 12 miles northeast of Medford.

Officer Attends Graduation of Student, Whose Life He Saved When She Was 5

This past May, Josibelk Aponte graduated ‘magna cum laude’ from Eastern Connecticut State University

Officer Attends Student's Graduation, Whose Life He Saved When She Was Five

On June 25, 1988, a fire broke loose in an apartment on Washington Street in Hartford, Connecticut. Inside was five year-old Josibelk Aponte and her uncle Jofrey. Peter Getz, a patrolman at the time, was one of the first to respond. In a fascinating story published by the Hartford Courant, Getz says he arrived to a firefighter carrying out a young girl.

The firefighter thrust Aponte into Getz’s arms, rushing back to battle the blaze and look for more survivors. Paramedics had yet to arrive so Getz and his partner decided to rush Aponte to the hospital. It was then that Getz noticed something wrong— Aponte wasn’t breathing.

As his partner raced to the hospital, Getz got in the back seat with Aponte and performed CPR. By the time they arrived, Josibelk was breathing on her own. Getz told the Courant:

“It’s one of those things that touches your heart and stays with you. It’s a situation that we could control, that we could foresee the outcome of. The firemen did their job, I did my job, the hospital staff did their job. As a result, we still have a beautiful young woman still on the face of the Earth.” [source]

This past May, Aponte graduated magna cum laude from Eastern Connecticut State University. And there in attendance was Getz, beaming from ear to ear. You can read more about this story at the Hartford Courant where you can go in-depth and learn more about the retired officer and recent grad.

Woman Who Saved 30,000 Children Honored with Inaugural $1M Aurora Prize

Marguerite Barankitse saved 30,000 children during the Burundian Civil War and opened a hospital that has treated over 80,00 patients

In 1993 civil war broke out in Burundi. The war, which was the result of long-standing ethnic divisions between the Hutu and the Tutsi ethnic groups, would last 12 years and claim the lives of roughly 300,000 people.

At the outbreak of the war, Marguerite Barankitse, a Tutsi, tried to hide 72 of her closest Hutu neighbors to keep them safe from prosecution. They were discovered and executed and Barankitse was forced to watch. Following this gruesome incident, Barankitse was inspired to start her mission at the Catholic diocese where she worked, caring for children and refugees.

She created an environment where both Hutus and Tutsis could seek refuge and saved roughly 30,000 children during the horrific civil war. In 2008, she opened a hospital which as treated more than 80,000 patients to date.

On April 24, 2016, Marguerite Barankitse was named as the inaugural Laureate of the US$1 Million Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity. At a ceremony held in Yerevan, Armenia, Barankitse was recognized for the extraordinary impact she has had in saving thousands of lives and caring for orphans and refugees during the years of civil war in Burundi.

As the first Aurora Prize Laureate, Barankitse will receive a $100,000 grant and continue the cycle of giving by donating the accompanying $1,000,000 award to organizations that have inspired her work.

Barankitse plans to donate the award to three organizations in order to advance aid and rehabilitation for child refugees and orphans, and fight against child poverty. These organizations are: the Fondation du Grand-Duc et de La Grande-Duchesse du Luxembourg, Fondation Jean-François Peterbroeck (JFP Foundation), and the Fondation Bridderlech Deelen Luxembourg.

As she accepted the award from Aurora Prize Selection Committee Co-Chair, George Clooney, Barankitse said:

“Our values are human values. When you have compassion, dignity and love then nothing can scare you, nothing can stop you – no one can stop love. Not armies, not hate, not persecution, not famine, nothing.”

“Marguerite Barankitse serves as a reminder of the impact that one person can have even when encountering seemingly insurmountable persecution and injustice,” said Clooney. “By recognizing Marguerite Barankitse’s courage, commitment and sacrifice, I am hopeful that she can also inspire each one of us to think about what we can do to stand up on behalf of those whose rights are abused and are in most need of our solidarity or support.”

On behalf of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide and in gratitude to their saviors, an Aurora Prize Laureate will be honored each year with a US$100,000 grant as well as the unique opportunity to continue the cycle of giving by nominating organizations that inspired their work for a US$1,000,000 award. Recipients will be recognized for the exceptional impact their actions have made on preserving human life and advancing humanitarian causes.

Three men who were stranded on an uninhabited Pacific island for three days are safe, after using palm fronds to spell the word “HELP” in the sand on Fanadik Island in Micronesia.

The boaters had taken off three days prior (4 April 2016) from Pulap, Micronesia when their 19-foot skiff was capsized by a large wave shortly after departure.

The uninhabited island of Fanadik is located about 4 nautical miles from Pulap, and the three men said they spent the entire night swimming until they reached the island.

Watchstanders at the Sector Guam Command Center received notification from a Chuuk search and rescue liaison at 11:07 a.m. Tuesday of the overdue skiff en route the island of Weno. [source]

Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast, coordinated the assistance of the Navy P-8 aircrew and vessels in the area of the skiff’s last known location to assist in the search. AMVER vessels Brilliant Jupiter and Ten Yu Maru diverted and conducted a combined 17 hours and searched 178 miles of track-line. The Navy P-8 aircrew launched at 6 a.m. Thursday to assist in the search and located the men approximately two hours into their search.

“Our combined efforts coupled with the willingness of many different resources to come together and help, led to the successful rescue of these three men in a very remote part of the Pacific,” said Lt. William White, Sector Guam public affairs officer. [source]

AMVER, sponsored by the Coast Guard, is a computer-based voluntary global ship reporting system used worldwide by search and rescue authorities. With AMVER, rescue coordinators can identify participating ships in the area of distress and divert the vest-sited ship or ships to respond.

Since March 28, watchstanders throughout the Coast Guard 14th District have coordinated rescue efforts in the Pacific for seven separate search and rescue cases of this nature, involving 10 AMVER vessels and six aircrews resulting in 15 lives saved. [source]

This Cat has the Biggest Eyes I Have Ever Seen (11 Photos)

Meet Matilda, a beautiful cat with a rare eye condition.

Matilda was born in February of 2013 in a hoarder house. She was saved by a rescue society and adopted 12 weeks later by a loving family. As she grew older everything was normal aside from a squinty eye and enlarged pupil she would periodically get. Her owners took her to the vet several times, but by the time they arrived the squinting and enlarged pupil always subsided.

The owners decided to reach out to the rescue society to see if any other kittens from the litter had reported any eye issues and it turned out two of them had developed a mysterious eye condition. They took Matilda to a veterinary ophthalmologist who said Matilda displayed signs of spontaneous ‘lens luxation’. An owner of one of the other kittens opted for surgery with mixed results so the family decided to take a ‘wait and see’ approach instead.

Both of Matilda’s eyes have since luxated and she now gets eye drops for treatment along with regular checkups to monitor any changes in behaviour that might suggest she’s uncomfortable (the pressure levels in her eyes remain normal). Although nearly blind she can still see light and motion. Her owners are happy to report that Matilda seems to be doing well and is adjusting to her new-found fame as an Instagram sensation.

Matilda’s vet also recently spoke with The Huffington Post to assure people that she is not suffering: “Many people see her photo and assume she is in pain and needs to be taken from her owners,” the vet said. “She is not and does not.”

Abandoned Magpie Roams Free but Always Returns to Family that Rescued Her

It was a cold and windy day when Cameron Bloom’s son Noah spotted her, a 3-week old Magpie that had fallen out of her nest and been abandoned by her mother. “She barely had any feathers … and she was close to dying,” Bloom recalls.

The Sydney-based family took her to their local vet where they were told it was possible to raise the chick but that magpies required a lot of time and care and needed to be fed regularly and often.

The family of five (three boys) were up for the challenge and nursed the abandoned magpie back to health. They named her Penguin and they made her a nest in one of the trees in their backyard. She comes and goes as she pleases but she always seems to come back to the family that rescued her.

Bloom, who is a professional photographer, has been documenting the relationship between Penguin and his family on the wildly popular Instagram account @penguinthemagpie, which now boasts over 68,000 followers. Be sure to check out the incredible feed that already features nearly 100 beautiful portraits of Penguin and the Bloom family.

A Sanctuary for Orphaned Kangaroos Whose Mothers Have Been Hit by Cars

kangaroo dundee chris brolga barns kangaroo sanctuary (15)

In 2005 Chris ‘Brolga’ Barns set up a baby kangaroo rescue centre in central Australia’s Alice Springs. The centre was created to raise and nurture orphaned kangaroos whose mothers had been struck and killed by vehicles in Australia. Often Chris would find the orphans at the side of the road still in their mother’s pouch.

After receiving generous donations from around the world, Barns went on to build his own wildlife sanctuary from 2009-2011. The sanctuary currently houses 28 kangaroos and one camel.

Barns’ career began as a bird keeper at Pearl Coast Zoo in Broome, Western Australia. Later he was a zookeeper at Tipperary in the Northern Territory. It was at Pearl Coast Zoo however, when Barns had his first experience with an orphaned joey:

“My first experience with an orphan kangaroo joey was in 1989 when I was a 17 yr old Zookeeper at Pearl Coast Zoo in Western Australia. Her name was Josie Jo – a beautiful Western Grey joey being raised at the zoo staff quarters where I lived. The adventure of having a joey in the house and helping raise her made me realise that all I wanted to do in life was be the best ‘kangaroo mum’.” [source]

One day in 2011, Barns received a phone call from film director Andrew Graham-Brown, asking if Barns would be interested in doing a ‘taster tape’ about his life with kangaroos. The ‘taster tape’ is kind of like a move trailer made to entice broadcasters to commission a film or show. The tape Andrew and Chris made was well received by the BBC and they decided to fund a two-part series for Natural World.

It turns out people cared about what Chris was doing because the two-part series lead to a BBC Two series entirely dedicated to Barns’ life with kangaroos called, Kangaroo Dundee. The show has just completed its second season.
