Picture of the Day: Coolest. Duck. Ever.

COOLEST. DUCK. EVER.

Why fly when you can surf? This is without doubt, the coolest duck in the history of our planet. It was uploaded to Reddit earlier this week by ubomw and has since spawned an epic photoshop battle.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to verify if this image was a result of perfect timing or skillful manipulation, and a reverse image search on Google and Tineye did not produce any concrete results. Regardless, it made me chuckle and it’s by far my favourite image of the week, so full kudos to ubomw on Reddit for the find.

The 50 Most Perfectly Timed Photos Ever

By Internet standards, a perfectly timed photo occurs when two of the following three conditions are met:

1. Perfect Place
2. Perfect Time
3. Perfect Angle

Sometimes the holy trinity of perfectness is achieved and you get an Internet classic like so many of the photographs below. There are countless galleries of these images floating around. I tried my best to compile the most representative of this concept. If you’re craving more, the following links are a good start: r/PerfectTiming on Reddit; Bored Panda (here, here and here); BuzzFeed (here and here)

Enjoy!

UNDER THE BRIDGE

Coincidence.

Photograph by Tea Kolo on Flickr

In this perfectly timed and beautifully framed photograph by Tea Kolo, we see a sailboat passing under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. A hole in the fence perfectly encircles the sailboat, making for a creatively framed shot.

The photo was first spotted on Colossal’s semi-regular Flickr Finds posts where Jobson (site owner) compiles images that caught his eye while perusing Flickr’s extensive archives.

Picture of the Day: Sky is Falling

SKY IS FALLING

What a moment.

At first glance it may seem like the rock is about to fall on the poor raccoon, but upon closer inspection you’ll see it’s actually a perfectly timed photo and perfectly captured reflection of the sky in the pond behind. The photograph was taken at the Hinckley Reservation in Northern Ohio and the photographer (Raccoon Photo on Flickr) says the image is completely unedited and the water that day was very still.

Hinckley Reservation is the site of the nationally known annual return of the buzzards. Located in Hinckley Township in Medina County, the reservation is dominated by the 90-acre Hinckley Lake. Another attraction of the reservation is Whipp’s Ledges, with elevations rising 350 feet above Hinckley Lake and formed more than 250 million years ago.

Picture of the Day: The Eye of the Moon

THE EYE OF THE MOON

the-moon-through-north-window-arches-national-park-utah-united-states

In this perfectly timed shot we see the moon through the North Window arch at Arches National Park in Utah. The park is located in Eastern Utah and is known for preserving over 2,000 natural sandstone arches. The park is 76,679 acres (31,031 ha) in area. Its highest elevation is 5,653 feet (1,723 m) at Elephant Butte, and its lowest elevation is 4,085 feet (1,245 m) at the visitor center. Forty-three arches have collapsed due to erosion since 1970. First spotted on Reddit, a reverse image search on Google and Tineye did not uncover an original source for this photograph. If you know who took this fantastic capture please advise in the comments!

*Update: Many thanks to Soulful Nature on Facebook for help identifying the photographer! Check out their page on Facebook for more great pics!

MOVING THE EIFFEL TOWER

Photograph by PDP-11 on Reddit

In this perfectly timed photo by Redditor PDP-11, we see a crane in the foreground lined up exactly with the Eiffel Tower, as if it were about to move the colossal structure at any moment.

The photo was taken from the user’s apartment. He says he had to lean out the photo just to get the alignment correct. This particular view of the Eiffel tower can be seen from the north part of 16ème near Place Victor Hugo.

Picture of the Day: The Earthquake Rose

THE EARTHQUAKE ROSE

the-earthquake-rose-art

Photographs by Norman MacLeod

On February 28, 2001, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake, located some thirty miles (48 km) below the surface of the Earth moved the ground for a bit more than half a minute. Damage was surprisingly light on account of the epicenter’s depth. A sand tracing pendulum located at a shop in Port Townsend, Washington, called Mind Over Matter (since moved to Sedona, Arizona), produced some very interesting patterns.

The smooth curves you see on the outside are what you normally see when someone sets the pendulum in motion. The seismic activity is responsible for the rose-shaped pattern you see in the middle. A beautiful design by one of nature’s most powerful forces.

Picture of the Day: Portrait of a Self-Portrait

PORTRAIT OF A SELF-PORTRAIT

portrait-of-self-portrait-at-concert

Photograph via 21000 on Reddit

In this perfectly timed concert photo, we see a crowd shot that was taken at the exact moment a concert-goer was taking a self-portrait. Details are sparse and I was unable to determine where this shot originated from, but the poster on Reddit claims it’s unedited.

Another commenter, who demonstrates some impressive camera knowledge in his personal assessment, agrees that it was likely an instance of ‘perfect timing’.

The Most Perfectly Timed Graphic Overlays in Sports

2012-olympics-perfectly-timed-graphic-overlay-oympic-ring-glasses

Yesterday, Redditor iR3C0N7 posted a perfectly timed graphic overlay of former Liverpool football manager Rafael Benitez. Like most sports broadcasts, graphic overlays are used to show statistics, game information and player names.

In the comment section, other Redditors contributed more examples of perfectly timed graphic overlays in sports. Below you will find the top 5. If you know of any other perfectly timed overlays, please let us know in the comments!

Picture of the Day: The Eye of the Drain

THE EYE OF THE DRAIN

Photograph by Liammm on Reddit

Certainly a contender for ‘perfectly timed’ photo of the year is this shot by a Redditor named Liam, who took a seemingly mundane photograph of a sink full of soapy water draining itself. Why Liam was even taking such a random shot to begin with makes the shot even better:

“My friend said something around the lines of, ‘Liam, you take too many photos.’ So I ran around the room taking photos of everything and showing him all of them, then this happened and we got spooked.” – Liammm on Reddit

And voila! An awesome shot that now sits #1 on Reddit at the time of this post. Oh and the thumbnail version of the image looks even more ‘eye-like’, check it out below!
