Star War Fans Turn Popular IKEA Lamp Into Death Star

“That’s no lamp. It’s a space station.”

Lylelo and her boyfriend are self-proclaimed Star Wars nerds. So when they read online that people were turning IKEA’s signature PS 2014 Pendant Lamp into the Death Star, they knew they had to try the DIY project for themselves.

Below you will see process shots of the craft project along with the awesome final results. You can learn more on Lylelo’s blog!

Step 1: Acquire IKEA PS 2014 Pendant Lamp

I used a can of light grey spray paint from the local hardware store. Do this outside because of the fumes and the necessary ventilation. If you want to have it perfect – cover the copper insides BEFORE you spray paint the outsides. [source]

We used masking tape for painting walls to cover the areas that should stay lighter. Using an X-acto knife and a cutting mat with a ruler proved to be helpful to have a variation in the strips. Cut some wide, some small, some long, some short. Alternate to create the pattern, the death star wasn’t all the same, neither should be yours. [source]

We created a stencil of the round weapon on a piece of paper first and traced that onto the lamp with a pencil. This step took a good bit of patience but it’s worth it to take your time and go wild on the details. [source]

Once you’re satisfied with the look of your pattern, you can paint a darker shade of paint over the whole ball. We decided that black was too dark and sharp as a contrast, so we mixed a darker grey colour. The paint is a mix of acrylic paint and a chalk paint, to give it a not so glossy finish. We found this paint in the hardware store. The round weapon was painted by hand with a fine brush. [source]

This Woman Makes Tiny Homes for Her Wild Bird Friends

Jada Fitch makes little dwellings for her winged friends and fills them with delicious treats because birds are awesome

tiny-homes-for-birds-by-jada-fitch-8

Jada Fitch is an artist and illustrator based in Portland, Maine. She’s also a self-professed ‘birder’ who not only enjoys birdwatching and illustrating them (her bird drawings are wonderful), but also making tiny homes for her winged friends and filling them with delicious treats.

Fitch not only decorates the interiors, she places them outside of her window so she can photograph and video them as they curiously peek in. While the tiny homes are just a fun crafts project, Jada’s illustrations are fantastic and you can purchase prints and other items through her online shop.

Jada also notes that the homes are not for nesting (although she does have permanent bird feeders in her backyard). She just places them out long enough for a quick snack, and a quick snap 🙂

Over the last 5 years, the Gallery of Steel Figures in PruszkĂłw, Poland has invited artists from around the world to participate in collaborative project to turn scrap metal into art.

Using found materials from a local scrapyard, these artists have recreated a Mercedes 300 SL, Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini Aventador, Maserati GranTurismo and Ferrari 250 GTO.

The attention to detail and commitment to accurately replicating the original is most impressive and can be seen in the interior photos, the curves of the car and even the exposed engine of the Bugatti.

In addition to the scrap metal supercars the gallery also features a wide variety of scrap metal replicas of famous pop culture characters and figures. Check out their official website and Facebook page for more.

Guy Builds Amazing Lego Star Destroyer With Three-Level Interior

The custom Imperial Star Destroyer measures over 4 ft, 7 in. long and weighs over 70 pounds

Guy Builds Amazing Lego Star Destroyer With Three-Level Interior (1)

Imgur user doomhandle shared his recently completed Tyrant Imperial Star Destroyer and it’s awesome. Measuring 4 ft, 7 in (1.4 m) long and weighing over 70 pounds (32 kg); it also features a three-level interior with characters, ships and removable sections.

The design is based on the 2014 LEGO Star Destroyer Set (75055) and the custom-design was built entirely with readily available LEGO pieces. It’s about 20 times the size of the official LEGO Star Destroyer set which allows for a lot more customization inside.

I’ve included exterior and interior shots below, but be sure to check out the full 45-picture album on Imgur where doomhandle goes into far more detail about the build and components of the ship.

Family Makes Amazing Gingerbread Replica of the Hotel from The Shining

A gingerbread version of the The Shining hotel, complete with rice krispie maze and five interior rooms depicting famous scenes from the film.

For the holidays, reddit user eudicotyledon and her family created a gingerbread version of the haunted hotel from The Shining, complete with a rice krispie maze and interior rooms depicting famous scenes from the film.

She says the project took about two weeks on and off with a non-stop 72 hours at the very end to get it complete. The family doesn’t actually eat the gingerbread house and it usually lasts for about 3-4 months.

If you’re interested in seeing more, you can also find a ‘making of’ album on Imgur. What a fun and creative project (although she admitted it was challenging at times) to bring the whole family together for the holidays.

If you find yourself in Lyon, France consider checking out the Musée Miniature et Cinéma created by world-renowned, award-winning miniaturist artist Dan Ohlmann.

Ideally located in the heart of “Vieux-Lyon” (the city’s historical centre), the museum is housed in the “Maison des Avocats” (Lawyers’ House), a famed 16th century building that is now a UNESCO world heritage site.

The collections extend over five stories, totalling almost 2,000 m² of exhibition space.

Unique in France, the main collection presents over 100 hyperreal miniature scenes on two stories. More than mere technical achievements, these creations are mirages of their own kind. Their outstanding realism revives one’s memories and exhales a distinct sense of nostalgia. The subtle lighting arrangement, the painstaking replication of old textures, the use of the same original materials, all contribute to the creation of a moving poetry that resonates with each new miniature panorama. The Little People Project by Slinkachu (22 Photos)

Documenting the lives of little people living in a big, big world.

Since 2006, street artist and photographer Slinkachu has been remodelling and painting miniature model train set characters, placing them in the streets and photographing their ‘daily lives’; leaving behind the tiny installations for others to discover.

The artist has left hundreds of his works around the UK and beyond and you can see much of the nearly decade-long project on his website and blog. The artist adds:

It is both a street art installation project and a photography project. The street-based side of my work plays with the notion of surprise and I aim to encourage city-dwellers to be more aware of their surroundings. The scenes I set up, more evident through the photography and the titles I give these scenes, aim to reflect the loneliness and melancholy of living in a big city, almost being lost and overwhelmed. But underneath this, there is always some humour. I want people to be able to empathise with the tiny people in my works. [source]

If you’re interested in limited edition prints of any of Slinkachu’s works, he is represented by Andipa Gallery in London. To see more of the ‘Little People Project’ check out Slinkachu at the links below.
