Portraits of People Seeing Their Younger Self in a Mirror

Tom Hussey is an award-winning lifestyle advertising photographer based in Dallas, Texas. In a series entitled Reflections, Hussey shows a series of elderly people looking in a mirror at their younger self.

According to an interview with PetaPixel, the idea first struck when Hussey was talking to a WWII veteran named Gardner. On the cusp of his 80th birthday, Gardner opined that he still felt like a young man.

The conversation would inspire Hussey to photograph Gardner looking into a bathroom mirror with a reflection of his younger self looking back at him. The resulting image was used in his portfolio and years later was picked up by Novartis as the concept for an advertising campaign for their Alzheimer’s drug.

The resulting campaign was posted by Hussey to Behance back in 2009. Since then it has been the third most ‘appreciated’ project on the entire website, with nearly 71,000 ‘likes’ and 1.535 million views.

Be sure to check out more of Tom’s amazing work at the online links below.

Historic Moments Blended Into Present Day Situations

Seth Taras is an award-winning artist and photographer from the United States. Back in 2004, Taras created a campaign for the History Channel entitled, Know Where You Stand.

The campaign blends historic moments into present day situations. From the famous photo of Hitler at the Eiffel Tower to the Hindenburg disaster. The campaign was wildly successful, translated into 30 different languages and published in 130 countries. It even earned Taras the highly coveted Cannes Lions that year, which is the advertising industry equivalent to the Academy Awards.

Picture of the Day: Calibrating a Digital Billboard

CALIBRATING A DIGITAL BILLBOARD

calibrating-a-digital-billboard

Photograph by fungiside on Reddit

What seems like a bad (or awesome) acid trip is actually a calibration test for a digital billboard. The video (although it appears as an image here) is a test to make sure all of the individual panels are working together to make one complete picture. And actually, if you look about a quarter of the way up from the bottom, you will notice a horizontal line going all the way across and breaking the pattern. This is what they are looking for when doing a test like this.

For everyone else passing by, this calibration test is likely to be much more interesting than the advertisement that will eventually occupy the space!

What if Superheroes were Sponsored?

Roberto Vergati Santos is an artist and designer from Italy. In his series Sponsored Heroes, Santos imagines a scenario where the world’s best known brands sponsor the most popular superheroes.

Brands already pay for endorsements from athletes, musicians and actors and there’s no questioning the star power of superheroes! While Bruce Wayne and Tony Starks don’t really need the money, some others may be forced to bow to corporate sponsors to pursue their passion for saving the planet.

All credit goes to the original artists who provided the source inspiration for the series: Admira Wijaya, Jim Lee, David Finch, Alex Ross, Derek Laufman, Ryan Meinerding, Alex Maleev, Gabriele Dell’Otto, Carlo Pagulayan, Jorge Pepelife, Adi Granov, Phil Noto. Not all of the artists’ work appears in the selection below. Be sure to check out the entire series on Behance.

Four Iconic Photos Turned Into ‘Selfies’

If you’re a part of any major social network you’ve undoubtedly come across a selfie; an arm’s length self-portrait that has become ubiquitous in the smart phone era (much like its predecessor, the mirror shot self-portrait).

In a recent print campaign for South-African based newspaper, Cape Times, advertising agency Lowe Cape Town imagined what some of history’s most famous photos would look like as self-portraits. The tagline for the campaign is: “You can’t get any closer to the news. Know all about it”

Brandalism Project Subverts Billboards Across the UK [25 pics]

Over a five day stretch, the Brandalism project saw 25 artists from 8 countries come together for the biggest subvertising campaign in UK history. Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol and London all saw billboard spaces co-opted by these street artists.

The term brandalism was first coined by writer Sean Tejaratchi and would be later popularised by Banksy. The initiative covers a gamut of artists from diverse disciplines such as: street art, graffiti, political art, culture jamming, photo montages and illustrations.

The main site where you can see all of the artwork, thoughts, themes and reasons for this initiative is at: http://brandalism.org.uk

The gallery is still being updated, but it’s interesting to hear why some of these artists feel so strongly against the advertising industry. You can get a taste of some of their thoughts here.

For now, please enjoy the gallery below, as it’s quite likely many of the pieces have already been taken down or covered up.

For a really great archive and resource of advertisements (of all mediums), I highly recommend Ads of the World. They do a fantastic job of cataloguing ads and are a great source for inspiration.

Anonymous Street Artist Adds Photoshop Toolbar to H&M Billboards

Last week an unknown street artist pasted Photoshop toolbars to several H&M billboards in Hamburg, Germany. The humourous adbust was spotted by blogger I’m Not Alex Bogusky on Tumblr. The ads in question show bikini-clad Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana, who is no doubt beautiful but certainly not this bronze…

But everyone knows photos (especially for the fashion and beauty industry) are touched up and manipulated don’t they? Regardless, it’s worth a chuckle and it’s interesting to see the ascent of Photoshop which is synonymous with digital editing and photo manipulation.
