Life in the Tube: 40 Years of London Underground Photography

The London Underground (also known as the Tube or the Underground) is a public metro system serving a large part of Greater London. The system serves 270 stations and has 402 kilometres (250 mi) of track. In 2012/13 London Underground carried over 1 billion passengers.

Since the 1970s, photographer Bob Mazzer has been documenting life in th Tube. Back then Mazzer worked as a film projectionist, a job that saw him travelling home late at night.

It was 1976 when Mazzer purchased a Leica M4 with a 35mm lens that his photography started to blossom. It wasn’t until many years later that Mazzer realized how extensive his collection of underground photos had become.

The culmination is a soon to be published hardcover book entitled, Underground. The 192 page book is being published by Spitalfields Life Books and will be released 12 June 2014.

Photograph by optickarma on Flickr

In this beautiful long exposure photograph by optickarma, we see fans heading home after an England vs Holland friendly at Wembley Stadium on Feb. 29, 2012. The police officers on horseback are clearly not moving much, which really adds to the dramatic effect of this photograph and the movement of so many people.

According to the camera info on Flickr, the exposure was 7 seconds long with a focal length of 23mm at f8 and ISO 200.

For those that are curious, Holland won the game 3-2. Knowing how passionate English fans are about football, the crowd looks to be moving quite orderly!

SUNRISE OVER LONDON’S
TOWER BRIDGE

Photograph by Jason Pope

In this stunning photograph by amateur photographer Jason Pope, we see a beautiful sunrise over the Tower Bridge in London, England. According to the Daily Mail, the photo was taken at 7am from the sixth floor office of the Northern and Shell building on Lower Thames street.

The equipment used? An inexpensive Panasonic point and shoot camera. Pope, a 35-year-old IT engineer said he shared his capture with some colleagues in the office and someone eventually posted it to Reddit where it promptly became the number one post for a brief period.

Tower Bridge (built 1886–1894) is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name. It has become an iconic symbol of London. The bridge’s present colour scheme dates from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for the Queen Elizabeth II’s silver jubilee. Originally it was painted a mid greenish-blue colour. Tower Bridge is sometimes mistakenly referred to as London Bridge, which is the next bridge upstream. [Source: Wikipedia]

LONDON TWILIGHT

Taken on April 7, 2006, this beautiful photograph shows the famous London Eye as viewed from the rear. It’s a 6 second exposure taken with a Canon 5D and 24-105mm f/4L IS lens at 24mm, f/4 and ISO 50.

The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel situated on the banks of the River Thames in London, England. The entire structure is 135 metres (443 ft) tall and the wheel has a diameter of 120 metres (394 ft).

It is the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe, and the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom, visited by over 3.5 million people annually. When erected in 1999 it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world, until surpassed first by the 160 m (520 ft) Star of Nanchang in 2006 and then the 165 m (541 ft) Singapore Flyer in 2008.

Supported by an A-frame on one side only, unlike the taller Nanchang and Singapore wheels, the Eye is described by its operators as “the world’s tallest cantilevered observation wheel”. It provides the highest public viewing point,[6] and is the 20th tallest structure, in London. [Source: Wikipedia]

Entrance to the Red Zone at the Natural History Museum

In this beautiful capture by Elia Locardi, we see the awesome entranceway to the Red Zone at the Natural History Museum in London, England. Locardi is fairly prolific on Google+ with over 569,000 connections. He also runs the wildly popular BlametheMonkey.com, a travel & HDR photography tutorial site.

Established in 1881, the Natural History Museum is one of three large museums on Exhibition Road in South Kensington, London, England (the others are the Science Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum). The museum is home to life and earth science specimens comprising some 70 million items within five main collections: Botany, Entomology, Mineralogy, Palaeontology and Zoology. The museum is a world-renowned centre of research, specialising in taxonomy, identification and conservation.

Like other publicly funded national museums in the United Kingdom, the Natural History Museum does not levy an admission charge. [Source]

Google’s Funky Headquarters in London

Located on five floors of the Renzo Piano designed Central St. Giles Building in Convent Garden, Google’s funky London headquarters were conceived by design and arhictecture studio PENSON. The quirky space comprises 160,000 square feet and features an eclectic mix of designs and British influences.

The space features 1250 desks and 1250 meeting chairs and collaboration seats and the ‘eco-design’ was just shy of receiving LEED Platinum certification. PENSON founder Lee Penson says of the space:

“It’s all about human beings and that’s it. Think sunken snugs, comfort, fun, comfy slippers, squishy carpets, cushions, daybeds, nice fresh food, gardening, vegetables, health, visual stimulation, relaxation, exercise, fresh air and you’ll get what it’s all about as a HQ.”

This sentiment can be seen in the: Granny’s flat designed area, the flower power boardroom, the incredible terraces, the padded cell meeting room and the outdoor garden space where employees can get their own IPE timber tubs to sow their seeds.

The design is in stark contrast to Google’s Engineering HQ in Victoria, London, but both spaces were designed by PENSON. It’s worth noting that the office featured below is for the sales and other non-engineering departments of Google London. It is likely that current and prospective clients are brought here and that such a unique office design will leave an impression with any guest that visits.
