North Bay, Canada resident Timothy Joseph Elzinga recently sighted light pillars in the night sky after being awoken by his son in the middle of the night.

According to CBC News:

“Light pillars appear when either natural or artificial light bounces off ice crystals floating close to the ground. In this case, the air was so cold that ice crystals were forming in the air, reflecting the city’s street and business lights.”

Elzinga captured the strange phenomena on his phone taking both pictures and video. You can find more photos here and a video recap of the event on YouTube.

Picture of the Day: Morning Frost Shadow

The contrast is ‘cool’ to see 🙂

morning-frost-shadow

Reddit user RandomMovieQuotes521 recently shared this interesting image of a frost shadow cast by his house earlier this month.

As the sun’s position moves throughout the day the frost will eventually melt, but the contrast is ‘cool’ to see 😛

We’ve actually done a post on frost shadows before. If you enjoyed this image, be sure to check out: 12 Examples of Frost Shadows

Exploring ice caves can be dangerous. Unless you’re an expert, go with a guide.

Tom Anderson, co-founder of social network MySpace, now spends his time travelling and photographing the world. His images are guaranteed to stir your travel desires; definitely check out his work on Instagram and Google+ where he is the most active.

In this photo taken last December, Tom explores the incredible ice caves of Iceland with a guide, which is very important because ice caves can be quite dangerous. If you’re interested in exploring an ice cave, a guide is recommended because caves can and do collapse.

Picture of the Day: Hiking Into a Glacier

A group of adventurous travellers hike into the Mendenhall Glacier near Junea, Alasaka.

In this incredible (and slightly terrifying) photo we see reddit user Travoli hiking into Mendenhall Glacier just outside of Juneau, Alaska.

In the comments, Travoli says he did the Mendenhall Glacier tour with Above and Beyond Alaska. It’s a full day hiking trip that takes about 8 hours and costs $230 USD per person. You’ll cover about 8-9 miles in total and have to carry a 10-15 pound pack. Hiking into the glacier is weather dependent and the guides will decide if it’s safe enough to enter.

What an incredible experience this would be!

Picture of the Day: This is Hair Ice

You may have never seen or heard of it, but hair ice – a type of ice that has the shape of fine, silky hairs and resembles white candy floss – is remarkable.

You may have never seen or heard of it, but hair ice—a type of ice that has the shape of fine, silky hairs and resembles white candy floss—is remarkable. It grows on the rotten branches of certain trees when the weather conditions are just right, usually during humid winter nights when the air temperature drops slightly below 0°C.

Now, a team of scientists in Germany and Switzerland have identified the missing ingredient that gives hair ice its peculiar shape: the fungus Exidiopsis effusa. The research was published on 22 July in Biogeosciences, an open access journal of the European Geosciences Union (EGU).

For more information on hair ice and how it occurs see the official European Geosciences Union press release here and the read the full paper here.

Husky Walks on Water After Heavy Rainfall Covers This Frozen Lake (10 Photos)

After a heavy rainfall covered this crystal clear, frozen lake; Russian photographer Fox Grom took some incredible snaps of his two beautiful huskies out on the water. The weather was calm, creating a mirror like reflection of the sky above and the illusion of the dogs seemingly walking on water.

The stunning photos were taken in northwestern Russia, near the town of Kirovsk in Murmansk Oblast. Geographically, Murmansk Oblast is located mainly on the Kola Peninsula almost completely north of the Arctic Circle and is a part of the larger Lapland region that spans over four countries.

For the complete gallery be sure to check out Fox Grom’s Vkontakte profile

Suntory Whisky CNC Mills 24 of the Coolest Ice Cubes Ever

In an award-winning campaign for Suntory Whisky, creative agency TBWA\Hakuhodo used a CNC milling machine to create the coolest ice cubes we’ve ever seen.

The campaign, entitled 3D on the Rocks, used a CNC (computer numerical control) milling machine or router, to carve and whittle ice cubes into the amazing sculptures seen below.

To prevent the cubes from melting, the CNC router was kept chilled to a temperature of -7 degrees Celsius (about 19 Fahrenheit), and each cube took between 1-6 hours to complete. For more information you can visit the official microsite at 3drocks.jp. To learn more about Suntory’s award-winning whisky click here.

In this quirky capture from one of my favorite subreddits, r/mildlyinteresting, we see frost that has formed on a windshield that looks like waves in an ocean or possibly a distant mountain range. Frost can make such cool patterns!
