These Look Like Photographs But They’re Actually Oil Paintings

Pedro Campos’ hyperrealistic still life paintings are incredible

Five years ago we featured the incredible work of Spanish artist Pedro Campos.

Hailing from Madrid, Spain, the 50-year-old worked in a variety of creative fields from interior decorating and illustration (at an ad agency); to art restoration on furnishings, paintings and sculptures. He actually didn’t even begin oil painting until the age of 30!

Campos credits his work in restoration in nurturing his ability in hyperrealistic painting. “The restoration of lost areas in antique paintings forces you to seek exactitude in color; any personal intervention should go unnoticed,” he tells the Huffington Post.

Campos is represented by the Plus One Gallery in London, England and you can see his work at the gallery’s annual group exhibition ‘Winter Show‘, which runs from January 24th to February 25th, 2017.

Unique in France, the main collection presents over 100 hyperreal miniature scenes on two stories. More than mere technical achievements, these creations are mirages of their own kind. Their outstanding realism revives one’s memories and exhales a distinct sense of nostalgia. The subtle lighting arrangement, the painstaking replication of old textures, the use of the same original materials, all contribute to the creation of a moving poetry that resonates with each new miniature panorama. Fraser Smith Made These Beautiful Quilts… Out of Wood

Each quilt is carved from giant blocks of glued basswood and the finished pieces can weigh over 60 pounds!

Trompe l’oeil is an art technique that uses extremely fine details that creates illusions (source). For example, Fraser Smith’s quilts are all made out of wood. That’s right: the pictures below may look like they’re made out of fabric, but they were carved out of wood!

What started as a childhood hobby has turned into a lifelong passion and transformed Smith into a master woodcarver. Using basswood, Fraser carves his artworks out of enormous blocks of glued wood; the finished products can weigh more than 60 pounds (source).

Working out of his backyard shop, the quilts take six to eight months on average to make, with the majority of that time spent sanding and painting (source).

Check out some of his mind-boggling works below, and be sure to check out his website and Facebook page for more incredible wood carvings like jackets and other everyday objects. For inquiries about purchasing original artworks contact the Russeck Gallery

15 Striking Photographs That Are Actually Paintings

Patrick Kramer is an American hyper-realist painter based in Springville, Utah. After graduating from Brigham Young University in 2008 with a major in art, Kramer has been painting professionally ever since. Each painting can take Patrick anywhere from 50 – 300 hours. In an interview with Wallhop, Kramer says his process usually begins with photographs. He comes up with an idea, gathers props, takes dozens of photos, plays with them on Photoshop and then uses the final digital composition for reference.

As for the age-old question, “why bother making something that looks near identical to a photograph?”, Kramer explains:

“I would say it’s a unique experience for the viewer. You approach a painting so much differently than a photograph… People will walk past a fairly banal hyper-realistic work, assuming it’s a photograph, but when told it’s a painting, will do a double-take. They’ll go back and scrutinize, look for brush strokes” [source]

Below are some of the Sifter’s personal favourites by Kramer. You can find many more amazing artworks at the links below along with the galleries representing Kramer’s original works for sale.
