Seen above is a photochrom print of Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany; taken as few as ten years after the completion of the castle.

Neuschwanstein Castle is a nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as an homage to Richard Wagner. Ludwig paid for the palace out of his personal fortune and by means of extensive borrowing, rather than Bavarian public funds.

The palace was intended as a personal refuge for the reclusive king, but it was opened to the paying public immediately after his death in 1886. Since then more than 61 million people have visited Neuschwanstein Castle. More than 1.3 million people visit annually, with as many as 6,000 per day in the summer. [source]

About 60 km south of Berlin there’s a former Soviet airfield where you will find an old airship hangar known as the Aerium. With over 66,000 m² (710,000 sq. ft) of floor space and 5 million m³ (176,573,333 cu. ft) of enclosed space, the idea was to create a self-contained holiday destination in the heart of Europe.

In December 2004, the Tropical Islands resort opened its massive hangar doors to the public.

At the Tropical Islands resort the temperature is always 26°C (78.8 F) and it’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The sheer magnitude of the space is just mind-boggling:

– 66,000 m² of floor space, 5 million m³ of enclosed space
– 360 m long, 210 m wide, 107 m high (L = 984 ft, W = 689 ft, H = 351 ft)
– 20,000 m² of UV-transparent film on the south side of the dome (to let in the sun)
– 6,000 people can be accommodated in the dome at any one time

Waterworld

The Tropical Sea covers an area of 3,000 sq. m (32,000 sq. ft), three times the size of an Olympic swimming pool. The water has a constant temperature of 28°C and there’s a 200-metre-long sandy beach.

The 1,200-square-metre Lagoon has a constant temperature of 32°C. A counter-current, two water slides and whirlpools in the bays provide guests with some additional fun.

Tropical Islands is home to Germany’s highest water slide tower. At 27 metres, it is the same height as a four-storey building. There are four different slides, including a 76-metre power turbo slide that allows the more adventurous to reach speeds of up to 70 kph.

Picture of the Day: Cologne Cathedral from the Top of a Spire

cologne-cathedral-at-night-from-top-of-spire-looking-down

In this dizzying night time photo we see what Cologne Cathedral looks like from the top of one of the two massive spires. The photo was taken by Vadim Makhorov, one half of the rooftopping duo On the Roofs.

Cologne Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Cologne, Germany. It is a renowned monument of Gothic architecture and is a World Heritage Site. It is also Germany’s most visited landmark, attracting an average of 20,000 people a day.

Construction of Cologne Cathedral commenced in 1248 and was halted in 1473, leaving it unfinished. Work restarted in the 19th century and was completed, to the original plan, in 1880. It is 144.5 metres (474 ft) long, 86.25 m (283.0 ft) wide and its towers are approximately 157 m (515 ft) tall. The cathedral is the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe and has the second-tallest spires after Ulm Minster. [source]

IN FRONT OF A MODERN HIGH-RISE

In the foreground is Eschenheimer Turm, the oldest and most unaltered building in the Innenstadt district (city center) of Frankfurt, Germany. Erected at the start of the 15th century (1426-28), the tower was a city gate that was part of the late-medieval fortifications of Frankfurt and is now a major landmark.

Towering above and behind the 47 meter (154 ft) tower is Nextower, a 136 meter tall (446 ft) office building completed in 2009. The fascinating contrast between the two buildings is captured perfectly in this photo by Wikimedia Commons user Epizentrum.

In this beautiful photo by Thomas Wolf, we see the Bastei Bridge, situated above the Elbe River in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Germany. The Bastei rock formation towers 194 meters (636 ft) above the river and is a major landmark of the Saxon Switzerland National Park.

The original bridge, constructed in 1824, was made of wood but was replaced 27 years later in 1851 by the present bridge made of sandstone. It is 76.5 meters (251 ft) long and its seven arches span a ravine 40 meters (131 ft) deep. The spa town of Rathen is the main base for visiting the Bastei; the town can be reached from Dresden by paddle steamer on the river Elbe. [source]
