This Windowless Plane Wants to Bring the Outside World In

windowless plane concept design (9)

The IXION Windowless Jet Concept was created specifically for the 2013 NBAA Business Aviation Show. Created by Technicon Design, it was also a recent winner at the 2014 International Yacht & Aviation Awards in the Exterior Design category.

The idea is to remove all windows, instead turning the interior cabin into a giant screen, using “existing or very near future technology to display the exterior environment to the inside surfaces of the cabin via external cameras.”

Check out the concept video below along with additional images and information.

Gareth Davies, Design Director at Technicon’s French Studio

“The ethos of the project is simple, to challenge current thinking, and propose something a little different, but not just a fantasy. It has to be credible and relevant, yet provoke discussion”.

“We quickly settled on the controversial yet interesting idea of removing the windows from the cabin and using existing or very near future technology to display the exterior environment to the inside surfaces of the cabin via external cameras. Removing the windows allows for weight reduction, simplifies construction and opens up an enormous spectrum of possibilities for interior design. We wanted to couple this with amorphous solar panels which power the low voltage systems on board and thus offer a unique visual dynamic for the exterior.”

“The user experience is greatly enhanced by directly engaging the passengers with the environment outside, to the point of exhilaration by giving an unhindered panoramic view from the inside. Parallax barrier technology allows the passengers to see different views at the same time on the same screen. A myriad of potential cabin moods and themes open up by tailoring the images or ambiance that is displayed, even by mimicking a more traditional interior if desired.”

best butter knife with grater kickstarter (4)

Equipped with a built-in grater, the Stupendous Splendiferous ButterUp turns cold, hard butter into easy to spread ribbons of dairy goodness. If you keep your butter in the fridge you need this knife.

best butter knife with grater kickstarter (1)

The product is developed by Sydney-based firm Design Momentum. The team launched their project on Kickstarter seeking $38,000 in funding. That target has been eclipsed five times over, as their current pledges total over $213,000 AUD with 11 days still left in the campaign.

The key design element is a built-in grater that aerates and softens butter making it easy to spread. A wider blade helps collect the grated butter and provides more surface area for spreading. The knife is made from stainless steel and is dishwasher safe. Below are the prototypes that led to the final design.

We’re Now One Step Closer to the Hoverboard

zapata racing ZR hoverboard (1)

Photograph by Liam McKenna for ZR Hoverboard

Franky Zapata, founder of Zapata Racing, recently unveiled his latest invention, the ZR Hoverboard. According to their press kit, the device can soar up to 16 ft (5 meters) above the water and approach speeds of 25 mph (40 km/h).

The Hoverboard is a surf board that is attached to a PWC (Personal Watercraft) which provides the hoverboard with propulsion through the air; which is routed through the primary nozzle that is attached to the board. The thrust from the PWC is routed through an 60 ft (18 m) hose. ZR Hoverboard is basically a wakeboard on steroids that uses a rear-mounted water jet to speed you along.

To see it in action, check out the embedded video below. For more information visit Zapata Racing where you can also find a list of distributors and rental companies offering the ZR Hoverboard. Photography below by Liam McKenna.

This is the World’s Smallest 3D-Printing Pen

lix worlds smallest 3d printing pen (5)

The LIX 3D printing pen does not require paper as it enables you to doodle in the air. The pen functions similarly to 3D printers. It quickly melts and cools coloured plastic, letting you create rigid and freestanding structures.

LIX is highly portable with its small size and a power cable that plugs into any traditional USB port. Its smaller size (Height: 6.45inch/164mm – Diameter: 0.55inch/14mm) has made it an ideal 3D printing pen for all those who want to give their creative skills a try.

LIX was created by 3 founders: Delphine Eloise Wood, Anton Suvorov and Ismail Baran. The company recently launched a Kickstarter campaign that has already exceeded its initial £30,000 goal with almost 2,500 backers pledging £210,568, with over a month left in the campaign.

World’s First Real-Time 3D Printing Pen

3d printing pen real time 3doodler (2)

3Doodler is a $75 3D Printing Pen, hailed as the world’s first by co-founders Peter Dilworth and Max Bogue. The two launched a Kickstarter fundraising campaign yesterday (Feb. 19, 2013) and in less than 24-hours the campaign has gone viral with 5,800 backers pledging over $518,000; well ahead of their initial $30,000 goal. Oh and there is still 32 days of fundraising to go.

Below you will learn everything you need to know about this fun little product, from how it works to what it’s not and where to learn more.

[via engadget, Wired]

How Does it Work?

3Doodler uses ABS plastic. After being plugged in, the 3Doodler can draw in the air or on surfaces. As the pen draws, it extrudes heated ABS plastic which quickly cools and solidifies into a stable structure. They achieved this by taking a heated extrusion head off a standard 3D printer and incorporating it into a standalone device. Like a hot glue gun, a single piece of plastic is fed through the top, coming out melted through the tip.

Two buttons on the side allows a user to control the speed of extrusion (fast & slow). To draw 3D objects in real-time, a user must extrude at the slow speed setting so the plastic has time to cool down (as seen in the gif above).

3d printing pen real time 3doodler (9)

3d-printing-pen-real-time-3doodler-(10)

What if I can’t draw?

At the end of the day, it’s just a pen (albeit a pretty cool one). If you can’t draw with a ‘2D’ pen your skills are not going to magically change. The developers hope to address this issue with the use of stencils; kits that will help users create objects by tracing lines and designs on a flat sheet of paper and ‘welding’ them together using the 3Doodler (see Eiffel tower stencil above). Think of it as a model and you’re just prefabricating the pieces for future assembly.

If this product wants a chance at mainstream adoption it will depend on the community that forms around the stencil kits and how rich and freely accessible they become.

3Doodler Specifications

– The 3Doodler is 180mm by 24mm
– The pen weighs less than 200 grams or 7 ounces, although the exact weight will depend on the final shell specs
– 3Doodler will use a universal power supply. Provided you have the correct adapter for your country, 3Doodler will work on 110v or 240v
– The 3Doodler takes 1 to 2 minutes to warm up
– The pen itself has a metal tip that can get as hot as 270C and is not recommended for children under 12

Bluetooth Stickers Light and Beep with 100ft Range and Radar App

sticknfind bluetooth location stickers and buttons beep light up 100 ft range (10)

Did you hear that? It’s the sound of your keys beeping from the nether regions of your couch.
Did you see that? It’s the flashing light coming from your TV remote which is in the bathroom for some reason…

Don’t know where you cat went? Pull out your phone, load up the app and you’ll see he’s in the kitchen, sleeping on top of your cabinets. That’s the power of ultra-small bluetooth location stickers by Stick-n-Find, and their first production run should be complete in March.

sticknfind bluetooth location stickers and buttons beep light up 100 ft range (7)

Each sticker has a diameter of 0.98 Inches x Thickness 0.16 Inches (24mm x 4mm) and a weight of 0.15 ounces (4.5 grams). They have a range of about 100-ft (30 meters) and use a replaceable CR2016 watch battery with about a 1-year battery life (based on 30 minutes a day usage). The Bluetooth location stickers use Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.

sticknfind bluetooth location stickers and buttons beep light up 100 ft range (5)

The Stick-N-Find app works iOS devices with Bluetooth 4.0 (iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, new iPad, New Touch, mini iPad) and Android devices supporting Bluetooth Low Energy, running Android 4.1 and newer.

sticknfind bluetooth location stickers and buttons beep light up 100 ft range (4)

Virtual Leash: This feature allows you to create a virtual Leash on a sticker. If that sticker moves away more than the approximate selected distance from your phone, the app will alarm you. You can select different types of alarms for different Stickers.

sticknfind bluetooth location stickers and buttons beep light up 100 ft range (3)

“Find It” Alerts: If you are looking for a missing sticker that your phone cannot find, or is not in range use a ‘find it’ alert. Once that sticker is in range, your phone will alert you. For example, waiting for your luggage at an airport carousel: have a seat and wait until your alarm goes off.

sticknfind bluetooth location stickers and buttons beep light up 100 ft range (8)

The maximum recommended number of stickers per smartphone is 20. You can pair the stickers to multiple phones, and even see all the stickers in range on the radar screen from multiple phones, but only one device can connect to a sticker to make it buzz, light up or create a virtual leash.

sticknfind bluetooth location stickers and buttons beep light up 100 ft range (11)

The Stick-N-Find Bluetooth location stickers use 3M VHB adhesive. It adheres to most surfaces and creates a achieves full strength in about 1 hour. Batteries can be replaced by twisting off the top, so you do not need to remove the sticker to replace the battery.

sticknfind bluetooth location stickers and buttons beep light up 100 ft range (2)

The app does not show direction. The radar screen is used to show distance of the Stick-N-Find to your phone, but not direction. Once you have located a sticker on the radar screen you start walking in a specific direction and see if the sticker gets closer or farther away.

sticknfind bluetooth location stickers and buttons beep light up 100 ft range (1)

On their website the MSRP is $49.95 for 2 stickers and $89.95 for 4 stickers. There’s a crowdfunding page on indiegogo.com where they have already raised $680,000. There you can pre-order 2 stickers for $35 or 4 stickers for $65.

sticknfind bluetooth location stickers and buttons beep light up 100 ft range (15)

For those wanting a device with greater range than 100-ft, there is the Bluetracker with a range of 2,500 ft. (800m). The device is larger and the battery will only last about 2 months though. Engadget also reports that the designers will be offering an SDK so developers can create their own apps and uses for the stickers. This is where some new and unexpected uses will emerge.
