If Augmented Reality Went Too Far

This looks like a nightmare

Hyper-Reality is a conceptual short film by Keiichi Matsuda. It presents a provocative and kaleidoscopic new vision of the future, where physical and virtual realities have merged, and the city is saturated in media.

It is the latest work in an ongoing research-by-design project by Keiichi Matsuda (previous works include Domestic Robocop, Augmented City 3D and Keiichi’s Masters thesis Domesti/city.

Below you can find the short film embedded along with some stills and gifs from the project. For more projects by Matsuda, visit http://KM.CX.

Hyper-Reality by Keiichi Matsuda

Our physical and virtual realities are becoming increasingly intertwined. Technologies such as VR, augmented reality, wearables, and the internet of things are pointing to a world where technology will envelop every aspect of our lives. It will be the glue between every interaction and experience, offering amazing possibilities, while also controlling the way we understand the world. Hyper-Reality attempts to explore this exciting but dangerous trajectory. It was crowdfunded, and shot on location in Medellín, Colombia. [source]

This Best Buy Flyer from 1994 Shows How Fast Technology Has Changed

Kids these days don’t know about that 14.4 modem life

For as long as I can remember, consumer electronics retailer Best Buy has published their weekly flyer. There was always something on sale and if they managed to get you in-store, the flyer had done its job.

Earlier this week, redditor /u/sheahofosho scanned an old Best Buy flyer from the week of October 23, 1994 and it really shows how fast technology has changed in 20 short years. You’ll find walkmans, VCRs, CDs, and camcorders; but what gets me are the specs and prices on the PCs! The flyer is a perfect time capsule and serves as a great reminder for how quickly technology is advancing.

3D ‘Holoportation’ Lets You Virtually Interact With People in Real-Time

Holoportation is a new type of 3D capture technology that allows high quality 3D models of people to be reconstructed, compressed, and transmitted anywhere in the world in real-time

microsoft holoportation (7)

Microsoft’s Holoportation is a new type of 3D capture technology that allows high-quality 3D models of people to be reconstructed, compressed and transmitted anywhere in the world in real-time.

When combined with mixed reality displays such as HoloLens, this technology allows users to see, hear, and interact with remote participants in 3D as if they are actually present in the same physical space. Communicating and interacting with remote users becomes as natural as face-to-face communication.

Check out the cool demo video below and watch out for Sergio’s grand entrance at 0:13. I have mo idea what he’s doing but it looks funny!

Nike Unveils Power Lacing Shoes That Automatically Tighten

When you step in your heel hits a sensor and the system will auto tighten. Then there are two buttons on the side to tighten and loosen.

Nike Unveils Power Lacing Shoes That Automatically Tighten (3)

Nike unveiled their 1st Generation power lacing shoe yesterday the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0. “When you step in, your heel will hit a sensor and the system will automatically tighten,” explains Tiffany Beers, Senior Innovator, NIKE, Inc., and the project’s technical lead. “Then there are two buttons on the side to tighten and loosen. You can adjust it until it’s perfect.”

Check out the embedded videos below to see the shoes in action.

“Adaptive lacing” as Nike calls the technology, is years in the making. The team first came up with a snowboard boot featuring an external generator. While far from the ideal, it was the first of a series of strides toward their original goal: to embed the technical components into such a small space that the design moves with the body and absorbs the same force the athlete is facing. The Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 is the company’s first step into adaptive performance. It’s currently manual (i.e., athlete controlled) but it makes feasible the once-fantastic concept of an automated, nearly symbiotic relationship between the foot and shoe.

The Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 will be available only to members of Nike+ beginning Holiday 2016 in three colors. To become a Nike+ member and sign up for notifications about the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0, go to Nike.com.

Guy Designs Digital Sundial That You Can 3D Print Yourself

No batteries, no motor, no electronics… Just an awesome shadow show brought to you by your neighborhood sun

digital-sundial-that-you-can-3d-print-yourself-by-mojoptix-(cover)

Maker and 3D printing enthusiast, Mojoptix, has designed a digital sundial that displays time with actual digits! The shape of the sundial was mathematically designed to only let through certain rays from the sun at the right time/angle.

The sundial displays time from 10:00 until 16:00, updating every 20 minutes. As Mojoptix adds, “no batteries, no motor, no electronics… It’s all just a really super-fancy shadow show.” If you’re interested in 3D printing the digital sundial yourself, you can find all of the necessary files on Thingiverse.

Mojoptix also created a YouTube tutorial explaining how it all works (embedded below). For those that do not have access to a 3D printer, you can get your very own through Mojoptix’s Etsy store.

Jeremy Clarkson Unveils Amazon’s Latest Delivery Drone

Amazon Prime Air wants to deliver packages weighing up to 5 lbs to customers in 30 minutes or less using drones.

new amazon delivery drone jeremy clarkson (2)

Amazon unveiled their latest delivery drone yesterday with help from former Top Gear host, Jeremy Clarkson. Amazon Prime Air wants to deliver packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using drones.

The embedded video below shows actual flight footage from their latest unmanned aerial vehicle. The drones are designed to deliver packages that weigh up to 5 pounds (2.27 kg). The drones themselves weigh just under 55 lbs and are designed to fly under 400 ft in the air. While the technology is ‘there’, the major hold back will come from safety and regulatory approval from governments.

Prime Air is currently being developed in the United States, United Kingdom and Israel. You can learn more about Prime Air at their official website.
