Artist Designs 12 Special Shoes for 12 Former Lovers

In a series entitled 12 shoes for 12 lovers; Chilean born, London raised and New York-based artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz created 3D printed shoes for an exhibit currently on display until January 6th, 2014 at the Melissa pop-up shop in Miami.

Each shoe design is accompanied by an anecdote about the relationship that inspired it (some of the descriptions include profanity and NSWF photos). In an interview with Core77 Sebastian says his favourite design is ‘Cry Baby’ and that constructing each model in CAD was extremely time consuming and coming up with 12 different and decent ideas required at least 100 bad ones. You can find the complete interview here.

For many more photos of the concept and design work that went into each shoe, be sure to check out the extensive gallery on designboom. For more from Sebastian, check out his online profiles listed below.

Highlights from Burkina Faso’s Festival of Masks

Photographer Anthony Pappone specializes in travel, portrait and photojournalism. Since a child he has had a fascination with history, far away places and tribes with ancient cultures. Over the years Pappone has documented ceremonies and festivals around the world with many recent journeys around the continent of Africa. On Flickr and Behance you will discover numerous albums documenting these amazing events.

A recent series on Behance entitled The Spirit of Masks, highlights FESTIMA (Festival International des Masques et des Arts de Dédougou), a festival of masks that takes place every other year in the city of Dédougou in Burkina Faso.

Taken at last year’s festival, Pappone explains that the masks originate from a number of West African countries in addition to Burkina Faso. Dances are performed day and night and it is said the person wearing the mask embodies the spirit of the mask they wear. Some represent animals while others are used to ask for rain. While the images below show the visual component, an equally important element is the music and rhythm throughout the event.

To see more from the series check out the rest of the images on Behance or browse through the 148-picture gallery on Flickr. For more wonderful travel photography by Pappone, check him out at the links below.

Intimate Portraits of Cosplayers at Home

Klaus Pichler is an artist and photographer living and working in Vienna, Austria. After studying landscape architecture from 1996 – 2005 at the University of Life Sciences in Vienna, Pichler has been a freelance photographer ever since, working for international clients and pursuing personal projects.

In an ongoing series entitled Just the Two Of Us, Pichler takes portraits of Cosplayers dressed up, but within the confines of their own homes. Short for “costume play”, Cosplay is a performance art and subculture in which participants wear costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea.

In the project statement, Pichler states:

“Who hasn’t had the desire just to be someone else for a while? Dressing up is a way of creating an alter ego, a second skin which one’s behaviour can be adjusted to and causes a person to be perceived differently. ‘Just the two of us’ deals with both costumes and the people behind them.

For the photo series I visited owners of elaborate costumes in their own homes. The choice of location is not a coincidence: Nowhere else is the (abstract) link between the person behind the mask and his or her alter ego as visible as in their own home. Nowhere else would it have been possible to portray the mask and, figuratively speaking, the person behind it on the same picture. The costume—usually full body costumes, which completely conceal the ‘private’ person—represents the alter ego whilst the surrounding living space, so to speak, the ‘backdrop’ or stage design cautiously impart information about the person behind the costume.”

The extended project statement delves even deeper into the series and is worth a read if the photos below pique your interest. You can find many more interesting projects from Pichler at the links below. Klaus is available for commissions worldwide and is represented by Anzenberger Gallery in Vienna and Rockelmann & in Berlin.

Of Beards and Men

of-beards-and-men-by-joseph-oleary-2

Of Beards and Men is a labor of love for graphic designer and photographer Joseph D.R. OLeary. Over the past 18 months, he has photographed over 130 bearded men. Each portrait is an exploration into that man’s passions, personality and individuality.

Born and raised in Green Bay, Wisonsin, OLeary has operated his own design studio for over 20 years. Following a difficult 2011/2012 during which his brother unexpectedly passed and he underwent a bout of Lyme disease, OLeary was looking for a way to refocus his energies. In a Q&A on his Kickstarter campaign, OLeary explains:

“As a photographer, I’ve always been compelled by portraiture — of myself and others. People are fascinating and everyone has a story to tell. It is these ‘stories’ that need to be recorded through portraiture.

The project transformed from a simple study of photographing bearded men to an in depth exploration of how men define themselves — personally, professionally or spiritually — in a culture that seems obsessed with defining masculinity as well as granting the freedom of defining your own personal style.”

You can find all of the portraits at the official website. The ultimate goal of the project is to print a limited-edition coffee table book. The print run will be limited to 1000 copies and you can support the campaign right now on Kickstarter.

Launched on June 10th and running until August 16th, the project has reached 71% of it’s $27,000 funding goal. For more information please visit any of the links below.

Someone Crocheted a Giant Sweater for this Mister Rogers Statue

Located near Heinz Field on the North Shore in Pittsburgh, is a large 10 ft bronze sculpture of Pennsylvania native, Mister Fred Rogers. The statue, created by artist Robert Berks, weighs about 4 tons and was dedicated on November 5, 2009. [Source]

Two years later, artist Alicia Kachmar crocheted a gigantic red cardigan sweater for the statue. The red cardigan was arguably Rogers’ most recognizable piece of clothing worn on his famous children’s television series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Alicia said the idea was started by the Outpost Journal, a not-for-profit art and design publication. Outpost had put out a request for capable crocheters in the area and Alicia answered the call.

In an interview with Misters Rogers & Me, Alicia explains:

“I worked during the day and then babysat until 11pm every night, so I would work on it after my ‘charge’ went to bed. I don’t even want to know how many hours it took! It took many many, skeins of yarn, and I actually crocheted with 3 strands of yarn together and a giant crochet hook… Because of the way the statue was made, with his arms against his legs, I couldn’t just ‘crochet a sweater’; it had to be done in panels and then sewn onto him. The part of the sweater that I am most proud of is the zipper–it’s a real zipper!”

If you’d like to see more crocheted artworks by Alicia be sure to check out her official website and Etsy store.

Teacher Wears Same Outfit in 40 Consecutive Yearbook Photos

techer-wears-same-yearbook-photo-outfit-for-40-years-(5)

After a teaching career that spanned 40 years (1973-2012), Dale Irby, 63, has left behind a legacy of yearbook photos in which he is wearing the exact same outfit year after year. According to the Dallas Morning News it began as an accident:

“I was so embarrassed when I got the school pictures back that second year and realized I had worn the very same thing as the first year,” said Dale, 63. But his wife, Cathy, dared him to do it a third year. Then Dale thought five would be funny. “After five pictures,” he said, “it was like: ‘Why stop?’”

Dale was a physical education teacher at Titche Elemntary in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas. Aside from a great sense of humour, Irby was a well-respected teacher and even had the gymnasium named in his honour. Let’s give a hand to Dale and countless other amazing teachers around the world!

15 Famous Eyeglasses

Throughout history and popular culture, we have come to associate specific looks and styles with certain people. One example of such ‘trademarks’ is eyewear.

In a personal project entitled Famous Eyeglasses, freelance web designer Federico Mauro put together a series of posters featuring solely the glasses on a plain background with the name of the person underneath (which subtly forms a kind of mouth). Let your imagination fill in the rest.

Classic Statues Dressed in Modern-Day Clothes

http://www.behance.net/alexis-persani

In a series entitled /// Street stone ///, photographer Léo Caillard and retoucher Alexis Persani imagine what classic statues would look like if they were dressed in modern-day clothing.

Through meticulous digital photo manipulation, Persani is able to create the illusion that the statues are actually wearing clothes by achieving realistic lighting, shadows and textures. It’s a fun exploration that interestingly makes the statues appear more lifelike and relatable.

Meet Ali, the World’s Most Dapper 83-Year-Old

Meet Ali. An 83-year-old from Turkey that has been living in Berlin, Germany, for the last 44 years. Ali used to be a doctor but now works as a tailor. He has 18 children and a fantastic wardrobe.

On his daily commute he happens to walk by a cafe that photographer Zoe Spawton works at. He passes the cafe each day at exactly 9:05am. Zoe noticed Ali was always impeccably dressed, so one day she asked if she could take his photo. Ali gladly accepted and What Ali Wore was born.

Although the site launched last August, it wasn’t until a recent post on Reddit that Ali and his trendy threads received widespread attention.

Below you will find a small collection of my personal favs. Be sure to check out alioutfit.tumblr.com for all of Ali’s awesome outfits!
