This Guy Wants to Grab Coffee with Every Friend on Facebook

We all have ‘friends’ on Facebook but how well do we truly know them? Matt Kulesza plans on finding out, starting a project he calls 1000+ coffees:

“I plan to have a one-on-one coffee with every single one of my 1000+ Facebook “friends” over the space of the next three years, or as long as it takes to complete. An exercise in remembering to socialise with and get to know people outside of the ‘book.”

Behind each photo is a story of the encounter. How they originally met, what they’re up to now and of course, what they drank. The project began in September and Matt has already had 25 coffee dates. You can keep up with the latest on Facebook (of course) and Tumblr.

To learn more about the project and how it has already changed his life, check out this article on the Daily Mail.

This afternoon I had the absolute pleasure of catching up with my old friend from primary school, Cal Mero, someone I haven’t seen in thirteen years. I last saw Cal in 2001 at a primary school reunion, which I barely remember, but prior to that, we hadn’t seen each other since we finished grade six in 1998. Cal was one of those kids who said they wanted to become a marine biologist when they grow up. Cal actually became a marine biologist when he grew up. He’s also an insanely talented and… [Read more]

This morning I rode out to East Brunswick to have coffee with one of the funniest, wittiest and often inappropriate (in the best possible way) people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with over the years, ‘Mia Oopsididitagain Haberdashery-Jones.’ Mia and I worked together at an izakaya in Melbourne in 2011, I worked in the saké bar and she worked as a chef in the kitchen. Maria makes me laugh harder than almost anyone I know and… [Read more]

Today was the first time Kit and I met each other IRL. The only Facebook correspondence we’d had before setting up this coffee was me saying “Hello Kit!” when we first added each other in 2011. Despite Kit’s predictions of it being potentially weird, it was awesome! [Read more]

This afternoon I had coffee and “natural, orange” wine with the very talented and hilarious Sally Humble. Sally was in the year level above me in high school and also happens to be my sister’s best friend’s sister, so we had been friendly with each other for years. She’s also one of two people from high school that I’m still in touch with (her brother being the other person). In 2011 she posted a random Facebook status looking for… [Read more]

Tonight I caught up with the beautiful soul that is Ben Montero in his studio space at School House Studios in Collingwood. Ben is an amazing artist and musician. Instead of documenting our coffee with a photo, we decided to draw our catch-up together. Well, Ben drew the picture and I copied his identifiable dog-character style and drew him [Read more]

This afternoon I had the absolute pleasure of catching up with Australia’s number one theremin player and all ’round excellent human, Miles Brown. The first time I ever remember ‘seeing’ Miles was at the St Kilda Festival in 2005. He was playing theremin on stage with Dan Kelly & the Alpha Males. [Read more]

Today I caught up with a relatively new friend but someone I definitely need to spend more time with, the overwhelmingly talented Becky Sui Zhen. Becky and I met last year when I was living in Tokyo. She was traveling with her boyfriend at the time (a mutual friend of my girlfriend’s) and we randomly ran into each other in Koenji… [Read more]

This morning I had the absolute pleasure of catching up with yet another ridiculously talented, finger-in-many-pies, inspirational go-getter-type Kate Geck. Kate and I met through her excellent, self-proclaimed ‘whorecore’ band Toxic Lipstick in 2010. For the uninitiated… [Read more]

These Adorable Grandmas Keep Accidentally Tagging Themselves as Grandmaster Flash

Facebook’s ‘auto-tagging’ feature sometimes leads to unexpected results. For example, there are a growing number of grandmothers on Facebook who have accidentally tagged hip hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash in their status update when trying to sign off their message with a ‘Love Grandma’ or something similar.

The hilarious results can be seen on Grandmaster Flash’s Facebook page as well as on the tumblr page, Love, Grampa and Grandmaster Flash. Below is a small collection of some of the funniest accidental mentions to date.

Inside Facebook’s Data Center Near the Arctic Circle

On the edge of the Arctic Circle, where the River Lule meets the Gulf of Bothnia, lies Facebook’s newest data center in Luleå, Sweden. Launched earlier this week, the center is now handling live traffic from around the world.

Facebook claims Luleå is likely to be one of the most efficient and sustainable data centers in the world. All the equipment inside is powered by locally generated hydro-electric energy. It is 100% renewable and they have been able to reduce the number of backup generators required at the site by more than 70%.

In addition to harnessing the power of water, they are using the frosty Nordic air to cool the thousands of servers that store photos, videos, comments, and Likes. Any excess heat produced is used to keep the offices warm.

Nearly all the technology in the facility, from the servers to the power distribution systems, is based on Open Compute Project designs. The Facebook-founded initiative encourages the development of “vanity-free” hardware designs that are highly efficient and leave out unnecessary bits of metal and plastic. These designs are then shared with the broader community, so anyone can use or improve them.

In early tests, Facebook’s Luleå data centre is averaging a PUE (power usage efficiency) in the region of 1.07
