Picture of the Day: X-Ray of a Pregnant Dog

How many can you count?

pregnant-dog-xray-4

In this incredible X-ray you can see how large the litter is for this Alaskan Malamute mom. It’s easiest to try to count by the number of skulls but even that is no simple task! I count at least 10 but suspect there are a few I’m missing.

The photo was recently posted on reddit but a reverse image search suggests the original image came from O’Mal Alaskan Malamutes. Incredible!

The Columbus Zoo’s ten-week-old Cheetah cub, Emmett, recently met his new companion puppy, seven-week-old Cullen. Emmett was born at the Wilds in Cumberland, Ohio. Due to a bout of pneumonia, he was hand-reared, for several weeks, while receiving treatments.

Cullen will help Emmett be more confident and calm around others and the two fast friends will grow up with each other being only three weeks apart in age. More photos and info on Emmett and Cullen can be found on Zoo Borns.

Dog Can’t Stop Smiling After Being Adopted

‘Meatball’ aka Meaty can’t stop melting hearts and making friends with his giant smile

When Lisa Reilly first saw a picture of ‘Meatball’ aka Meaty online, she got this feeling that he was ‘the one’. In an online essay, Reilly recalls:

“My senior bully had passed away 3 months prior and I had the exact same feeling when I adopted him at 10 years old, so I knew this dog was meant to be his predecessor.”

Meaty was adopted from Fresno Bully Rescue and lives happily with Lisa, her fiance, Punky and Ricardo (two other rescued pit bulls) and dachshunds Bitty and Dappe.

The smiling canine has been melting hearts and making friends online, amassing an amazing 46,000+ followers on Instagram. For more Meaty goodness follow @loveabulllisa

There’s a Statue in Russia Dedicated to the Most Loyal Dog a City Has Ever Known

For 7 years he returned to the same spot every day where his owners’ car crashed

In 1995, residents of Tolyatti, Russia began to notice a German Shepherd at the edge of South Highway. Every day the dog would be in the same place, rushing at passing cars as if he was looking for someone.

As word spread, residents learned the dog had been riding in a car with a man and woman. The car crashed and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was taken to hospital but died a few hours later. Only the dog survived and he remained in the area where the car had crashed.

His name wasn’t known so residents started calling him “Kostya” or “Faithful”. Residents built dog houses for him, other tried to adopt him but he would only accept food, always returning to the spot of the crash. [source]

For 7 years Kostya remained in the same spot, running up to passing vehicles and looking inside. He became a local legend and a fixture for all who used the highway that connected the old city to the new. Tragically in 2002, Kostya was found dead in the woods. There were no signs of injury so it was presumed he died a natural death.

Saddened by their loss, the city erected a bronze statue in Kostya’s honour entitled, Loyalty (Russian: Памятник преданности). The sculpture was made by Oleg Klyuyev and stands about 1.5 meters (4.9 ft) tall. It is set on a granite pedestal at the intersection of South Highway and Lev Yashin Street. [source]

The memorial was dedicated on June 1, 2003 and is the first monument in Tolyatti not erected for political reasons. Today the memorial is a popular visiting place for newlyweds, as a symbol of unbreakable fidelity.

By tradition, the young couple, to demonstrate and ensure their commitment to each other and to a happy family life, rub the nose of the statue, so that the dog’s nose has become polished by many hands. [source]

This Guy Rescues Stray Dogs and Takes Them on Weekly Train Rides Around Town

80-year-old Forth Worth, Texas resident, Eugene Bostick, is a good soul. Thank you sir

Guy Rescues Stray Dogs and Takes Them on Weekly Train Rides Around Town (2)

Eugene Bostick is a retired farmer from Fort Worth, Texas. According to The Dodo, the 80-year-old shares a farm with his brother and says people tend to abandon dogs on their property because they live at the end of a dead-end street.

Bostick says him and his brother were heart-broken by this and started to feed the abandon animals, taking caring of them, getting them spayed and neutered and providing a place for them to live.

Bostick says he’s currently taking care of nine dogs. They can roam free on his property but thought it would be nice to take them around to explore other parts of town. As an 80-year-old, walking nine dogs felt daunting so he fashioned a doggy train and drives them around with his tractor a couple of times a week. Bostick tells The Dodo:

“Whenever they hear me hooking the tractor up to it, man, they get so excited. They all come running and jump in on their own. They’re ready to go.”

You stay awesome Mr. Bostick, the Sifter salutes you.

Raven

Last May, Christina and her partner brought home Raven, an adorable Tamaskan puppy. One month later, the couple decided to take Raven to their local shelter in Lubbock, Texas to find a kitten she could grow old with.

“I had always wanted a dog and a cat to grow up together. It’s been like a life goal,” Christina told The Dodo. The couple brought over four shelter kittens for Raven to meet and one kitten, Woodhouse, took to Raven immediately.

Picture of the Day: Not Sure If Dog or Mop

Meet ‘Beast’, Mark Zuckerberg’s adorable Hungarian Puli sheepdog

Seen here is a Puli, a small-medium breed of Hungarian herding and livestock guarding dog known for its long, corded coat. The tight curls of the coat, similar to dreadlocks, make it virtually waterproof.

The adorable dog, whose name is Beast, has quite the following online— 2.3 million Facebook followers to be exact. This is due in no small part to his rather famous owner, one Mark Zuckerberg— who posted this awesome photo earlier today in celebration of the 4th of July.

Puppy or Bagel? Chihuahua or Muffin? Shiba or Marshmallow? (8 photos)

These are silly and I love them

Is this a puppy or bagel? The question was posed by Karen Zack (@teenybiscuit) on Twitter and was accompanied by a gallery of photos that humorously brought attention to the striking similarities.

The tweet went viral and Karen has since followed up her now Internet famous image with more comparisons between various dog breeds and foods. She has even added a few new animals to the mix like birds and shrews.

The Internet is having a field day with these and her images have garnered her a ton of media attention. For more fun and quirkiness from Karen, check her out at the links below.
