Left Photo NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS/TAMU | Right Photo Bill Dunford

In this fascinating comparison photo we see a view of Earth from Mars (as seen by NASA’s Curiosity rover) and Mars from Earth as captured by Bill Dunford. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the Solar System after Mercury. It is approximately 225,300,000 km away from Earth. It is also one of the five ‘visible’ planets from Earth.

For those interested, you can see the first ever image taken of Earth from another planet here.

The Style Transformation of David Bowie in One Glorious Gif by helen green (2)

In celebration of David Bowie’s 68th birthday (8 January 1947), artist Helen Green created the glorious animated gif above to show the style icon’s transformations over the years. The gif is made up of 29 individual images from Davie Jones (during 1964, when he released his first single ‘Liza Jane’ with the King Bees) to a recent image of him taken by Jimmy King, 2014, around the release of ‘Sue (Or In A Series Of Crime)’.

Below you can find some additional stills and progress shots of the project. Happy Birthday Mr. Bowie! To see more fantastic artwork from Green, check her out at the online links below.

Scenes from The Wire: Then and Now

scens from the wire then and now the pit

In honor of HBO’s re-release of The Wire—completely remastered in 16×9 full-frame HD—Baltimore Sun crime reporter Justin Fenton has been taking requests from people on Twitter and taking photos of present-day locations from the critically acclaimed television show.

All 60 episodes are currently being marathoned on HBO Signature and HBO Go (one season per day, starting on Dec. 26 and ending on Dec. 30). The Wire: The Complete Series will also be released on Digital HD on January 5, 2015, and on Blu-ray in Summer 2015. Show creator David Simon has some very interesting opinions about the newly remastered HD version and shares his thoughts on an extensive blog post on his website about the differences in framing etc. by switching from 4:3 to 16:9.

Now let Justin Fenton take you on a trip down memory lane with this ongoing series of scenes from The Wire, then and now.

What Places from Stand By Me Look Like Today

Stand by Me is a 1986 coming of age film directed by Rob Reiner and based on the novella The Body by Stephen King. The film received widespread acclaim and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture and Best Director.

Back in 2012 the blog Then & Now Movie Locations compiled an awesome comparison post showing what places from the movie look like today. In the original article you can even find screen captures of the locations on Google Maps.

The 2-year-old post recently resurfaced online thanks to a submission by powerpuff_threesome to reddit.

If you enjoy this series, be sure to check out Then & Now Movie Locations where you can find more compilations of films and shows like Breaking Bad, Casino, Top Gun and many more.

Two Tanks Filled with the Same Water but One has Oysters In It

two-tanks-filled-with-same-water-one-has-oysters-in-it-to-filter

Photograph by MARYLAND SEAFOOD
Website | Facebook | Twitter

In this striking visualization we see two tanks filled with water from the Honga River, an estuary of the Chesapeake Bay. The tank on the right also contains oysters. Over the course of 2 hours those oysters filtered all of the algae out of the water. The demonstration shows how effective oysters are at naturally filtering water which Maryland Seafood says benefits the entire ecosystem:

“With clearer water comes more sunlight penetration, more sea grasses, and more places for fish/crabs to hide from predators.”

Typically a single oyster can filter up to 2 gallons (7.57 litres) of water an hour. Check out the two videos below for a timelapse demonstration:
