A Game of Thrones Ice Hotel Just Opened and It Looks Unreal

This will make you want to hop on the next flight to Finland

Each year, around 20 million kg of snow and 350,000 kg of crystal clear natural ice are used to build the spectacular SnowVillage which changes in shape, size and design to amaze visitors year after year.

Covering an area of about 20,000 square metres, the SnowVillage consists of a Snow Hotel, with snow rooms and suites, Ice Restaurant, Ice Bar and Ice Chapel. This year, the entire hotel is Game of Thrones themed – with rooms designed by sculptors from Russia, Poland, Latvia and Ukraine. You can find a life sized Iron Throne with swords, a scary Braavosi Hall of Faces and a white walker with glowing blue eyes. For weddings, couples can get married in an Ice Chapel with furnishings made of ice. Snow Village – Game of Thrones® has been created in cooperation with HBO Nordic.

Nearly 200km above the Arctic Circle lies a destination of exciting Arctic experiences and a magical world made from snow and ice. At SnowVillage spend a cosy night in the snow hotel, a delicious dinner in the spectacular Ice restaurant and the coolest drinks served “on the rocks” from the Ice bar. Or, simply visit to marvel the vast corridors packed with snow rooms and snow and ice sculptures that are just waiting to be explored. SnowVillage is located in the Western part of Finnish Lapland, in close proximity of Ylläs and Levi ski-resorts and easily reachable from the airport of Kittilä. There are regular tours by car or snowmobile from the resorts of Levi and Ylläs to the SnowVillage.

The SnowVillage will be built for the 17th time in winter 2017-2018. The annual construction of the SnowVillage begins when the temperature drops to about ten degrees below zero during late October or early November. The constructors, specialized in using snow and ice as building material, are constantly developing new tools and equipment for snow construction and exploring innovative ways of taking this art form to new levels for your enjoyment. Sleeping, dining and visiting the SnowVillage is an enjoyable experience when wearing suitable winter clothing as the temperature of SnowVillage remains at a comfortable -2 and -5 celsius degrees, regardless of the outdoor temperature.

SnowVillage has yearly approximately 30 rooms, all made of ice and snow. As well as standard snow rooms there are also individually decorated suites each with a different theme and design. For wedding couples SnowVillage offers remarkable settings for an unforgettable day. Couples can choose between a cool Ice Chapel with furnishings made of ice and snow or a cosy wooden chapel.

Artist Transforms Fallen Redwood Into Giant Octopus (15 Photos)

Jeffrey Michael Samudosky gives a fallen redwood new life

Artist Jeffrey Michael Samudosky recently transformed a huge fallen redwood into an amazing giant octopus sculpture. In the progress pictures below you can see the incredible transformation and how the octopus slowly takes shape. To create the artwork Samudosky used a variety of tools including chainsaws, dremels and chisels.

Born and raised in Shelton, Connecticut, Jeff studied art and photography in high school. After graduating, he traveled the continent as an Outward Bound instructor, ice climber, and whitewater rafting guide. In Jackson Hole, Wyoming he trained as an Alpine mountaineering guide and became certified as a wilderness emergency medical technician. That was also the place where his life changed drastically.

A crash while snowboarding left Jeff with a broken back and no feeling in his legs. However, after eight months of painful recovery, Jeff regained the feeling in his legs and was back on his feet. Refusing let his accident stop him from being the energetic man that he is, he decided to get back on his snowboard.

While on his way to the mountain in Vermont he noticed some wood carvings along the side of a road, and he thought, “I could do that.” And so, JMS Wood Sculpture was born in 1998. His business has allowed Jeff to live all over the country and travel all over the world participating in competitions and he continues to be a trusted friend throughout the carving community.

Epic Hobo Nickel: Guy Carves Silver Dollar with Trap Jaws and Golden ‘Bait’ Coin

Russian artist Roman Booteen has carved one of the most intriguing ‘Hobo nickels‘ we’ve ever seen

Russian artist Roman Booteen has carved one of the most intriguing ‘Hobo nickels‘ we’ve ever seen.

Using a Morgan silver dollar from 1921, the ‘Hobo nickel’ features a golden ‘bait coin’, a Dos Pesos from 1945. The coin also features gold inlays (the broken arrows) and a working trap jaw mechanism (video embedded below).

The trap jaws are triggered when the gold coin is pressed. Booteen assures us that the spring is too weak to do any actual harm to your fingers and that it’s just a decorative element. The inscription is the Latin phrase: “Aurum multo magis animas perdidit, quam ferrum corpora cecidit” which loosely translates to: “Gold has killed more souls than iron”

This unique Hobo nickel was recently listed on eBay where the carved silver dollar fetched US$10,101! If you’re interested in seeing more Hobo nickels by Roman check out his artwork at the links below.
