Vet Says Pup with Tail Growing Out Its Head is Perfectly Healthy and Super Adorable

His name is Narwhal, and he’s the best

A 10-week-old pup named Narwhal has captivated the Internet with his tiny tail growing out of his head. Sadly, Narwhal was found abandoned along with another older dog, but was thankfully rescued by Mac’s Mission in Jackson, Missouri.

Mac’s Mission is a small, grassroots non-profit that:

“specializes in special”, our focus is on the homeless “janky” dogs who would die without us. The injured, abused, and birth defects, that is our mission. Shelters and rescues do not have the time or resources that we do so most of these special dogs get sadly euthanized. Our hope is to give them the chance they need to thrive and heal in an environment full of love and caring. [source]

After a visit to the vet, Dr. Heuring found ‘no medical need to remove’ the extra tail as it caused him no pain and was no connected to anything vital. Deemed non-life threatening, the little tail served no purpose other than to make him the ‘coolest’ puppy ever.

“He [Narwhal] is not available for adoption immediately as we want him to grow a bit more and truly make sure the tail doesn’t become a bother or problem. Right now he is pretty much the most unique amazing example of what we do here and we are so thankful to have the chance to be part of his journey. Thank you everyone for helping us help them!” – Mac’s Mission

Kid Told Not to Doodle in Class Gets Hired by Local Restaurant to Decorate Their Walls

9-year-old, Joe Whale, kept getting into trouble for doodling during class time.

Nine-year-old Joe Whale was doing great at school. According to his Dad, Greg, he was excelling in academics and even got placed into the gifted program at age 4. He also loved playing football and cricket but his biggest passion was by far, drawing. And it was this love that was getting him into a bit of trouble.

Apparently Joe was frustrated at the little amount of art he could do at school, so he resorted to constantly doodling on the whiteboard in class, which in turn drew disapproval from his teachers.

So his parents decided to enroll him in an after-school art class where he flourished. His art teacher was so impressed with his work that she (with permission) shared some of his drawings on Instagram where it was spotted by a local restaurant (Number 4 in Shrewsbury, England) who reached out to hire Joe to decorate their interior.

The rest is as you say, history. Joe now has a blossoming online following where he calls himself ‘The Doodle Boy’, and looks forward to growing and nurturing his passion for art.

Chicago Neighborhood Gets Yellow Brick Road Where Author Wrote Wizard of Oz

There’s no place like home

Bickerdike

A yellow brick road was recently completed in Chicago’s Humboldt Park Neighborhood in memory of L. Frank Baum, who wrote “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, while living at 1667 N. Humboldt Boulevard in 1899.

The yellow brick road at the corner of Humboldt and Wabansia spans about 70 linear feet and will also include a 5 x 11 ft Oz-themed mural by Chicago artist, Hector Duarte.

According to Block Club Chicago, the road and mural cost about $65,000 and was made possible by personal donations from nonprofit developer Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation, along with their architect and general contractor partners.

Bickerdike recently finished rehabbing nine units of affordable housing on the corner. One of the units sits on the site of Baum’s former home, which was razed years ago, said Bickerdike CEO Joy Aruguete. [source]

Baum was 44 when he wrote “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” one of the most well-known children’s stories in American history.

Aruguete said not many people know Baum wrote the classic while living in Humboldt Park. She noted he was inspired by his time playing with kids in the neighborhood’s sprawling namesake park. [source]

A Truck Driver Recorded His Travels Since 2012 and Mapped the Results

He’s logged over 750,000 miles on the road since 2012!

Map created by dancingchopstix on reddit

Reddit user and professional truck driver, dancingchopstix, has been recording his travels as a professional truck driver since 2012 and recently mapped the results.

In the comment thread on reddit, he provided some additional information and stories about his experiences:

– Originates from South Central, PA

– “I use an app called Fog of World to record my GPS tracks. The app allows you to generate a custom image such as this. This map accounts for roughly 750,000 miles. I have traveled many of these roads multiple times.”

– “My longest run was from Edison, NJ to Seattle, WA.There have been times when I woke up and it was 90 degrees in GA and went to bed and it was 20 degrees in Indiana”

– Which road do you hate the most?
Indiana and Michigan. Their roads are always beat to hell

– Which state takes the best care of its roads in your view?
Texas has nice roads, but then they really dont have nasty winters either.

– Where was your favorite spot?
Oh, there are so many wonderful places I love to stop at. The Pacific NW is my favorite part of the country to visit.

You can find some additional maps below that show a bit more detail of specific areas. If you are interested in reading more, check out the original post on reddit!

Guy Fakes Walking on the Moon in Protest of Giant Potholes on the Road

The best part is that it worked and the city is now fixing them

Indian artist Baadal Nanjundaswamy found a creative way to protest the outrageous potholes in his city (Bengaluru, India).

In an effort to bring attention to the terrible road conditions, he created a parody video where he pretended to be an astronaut walking on the moon—that is until a car passes by and the camera pans to show the road.

Check out the viral vid embedded below.

Not only was the video successful in creating awareness about the problem but it led to direct and actionable results. As the city was forced to promptly respond and road crews were filmed fixing the potholes!

Check out the video below for proof.

The creative approach has even spread to other parts of the globe, with Baadal recently sharing a video of another activist in Mexico using the same concept to spurn his city to action.

Check out the video embedded below.

Baadal Nanjundaswamy has actually become well-known for incorporating potholes into his street art. If you want to see more check out his work on Facebook.

You can also see a close-up photo of his homemade astronaut helmet below. Bravo Baadal!

The Tale of the 7 Trolls and the Magical Tower of Belgium

“They were seven good friends both together and alone, by the river in the valley in the forest they had home”

Artwork by Thomas Dambo

They were seven good friends both together and alone
by the river in the valley in the forest they had home
they had seen the sun set and rise a million times
the seven trolls stood as tall as the pines

Artwork by Thomas Dambo

Una and Joures were friends for life and like to lay in the grass
watching the skies crawl by telling stories about the past
Mikil was strong as a dragon and always on his way
Kamiel was wearing a mask a new for every day

Artwork by Thomas Dambo

Arvid like to carve his dreams into ancient trees
Hannes to put pearls on a string for everyone to see
and little Nora had only seen the sun rise around a million times
she was still a growing troll with her tail and young mind

Artwork by Thomas Dambo

They could see past the forest to where the future emerged
they had seen civilizations crumble and new rise from the dirt
they had seen the mountains grow turn to ice melt and burn
seen the fish turn to birds and seen the continents turn

Artwork by Thomas Dambo

And now they saw these little people with actions so great
It could break what forever and ever had made
And the trolls got afraid life should never be borrowed
It was meant to be shared with the day of tomorrow

Artwork by Thomas Dambo

So the seven trolls gathered up on a mountain top
To find a new way the old way of now had to stop
and Kamiel spoke up – we must help them get better
the little people mean good but they are too young to be clever

Artwork by Thomas Dambo

Let’s build them a tower as tall as a troll
and show them all beings are one in the soul
It took them all winter by summer it was done
they then invited all the little people to come

Artwork by Thomas Dambo

And the little people walked to the top where they opened their eyes
and saw past the forests the mountains and skies
they saw to the future with tears in their eyes
what they saw no one knows but the eyes never lie

Two Things: DeepFakes are Creepy and Bill Hader is the Perfect Muse

An intro to the machine learning ai that’s like ‘faceswap for video’

For the uninitiated, ‘Deepfake‘ is a technology that uses machine learning ai to “combine and superimpose existing images and videos onto source images or videos using a technique known as generative adversarial network“. [source]

Think of it as ‘faceswap for video’, with applications ranging from the banal and harmless to malicious and dangerous (e.g., fake news, hoaxes, conspiracies).

To get a sense of the technology, check out the videos below by Ctrl Shift Space, who uses deepfake technology to create videos for entertainment but to also raise awareness that you can’t believe everything you see online. People know images can be doctored, and now video can with relative ease.

In the embedded videos below, we see comedian and actor Bill Hader on various talk shows doing his impersonations of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Al Pacino, and Tom Cruise. Only this time, deepfake technology has been used to subtly superimpose the actors he’s impersonating onto Hader’s own face while he does the impersonation. The end result is something totally surreal and bizarre.

104-Year-Old Holocaust Survivor’s 400 Descendants Gather for Historic Family Photo

Shoshana Ovitz’s birthday wish was for her entire family to gather at the Western Wall

Photograph via Sivan Rahav Meir on Twitter

104-year-old Holocaust survivor Shoshana Ovitz celebrated her birthday with an incredible family photo of her and her 400 descendants at the historic Western Wall in Jerusalem, which is considered the holiest place in the world where Jews are permitted to pray.

According to JNS.org:

Ovitz survived Auschwitz, where she saw her mother handed over to Nazi doctor and war criminal Josef Mengele. After liberation, Shoshana met Dov Ovitz, whose wife and four daughters had been murdered. They married and lived in Austria before moving to Haifa in Israel, where they had two daughters and two sons.

According to Ovitz’s oldest granddaughter, about 10% of her descendants were missing from the photo, as they were unable to make the gathering.

Classic Still Life Paintings; Only the Food is Wrapped in Plastic

Life in plastic, it’s fantastic

Not Longer Life” reinterprets and reproduces paintings from classic masters such as Monet or Caravaggio, contextualizing them in the current situation, as if they were contemporary artists.

The series was done by architectural rendering firm Quatre Caps, who wanted to highlight what they see as an ‘absurd’ amount of plastic wrapping and food packaging on produce and food products at our supermarkets:

“This series intends to reflect about the direction that the consumer society is taking and the unconscious attitude we are taking about the natural resources in pursuit of an utmost and absurd comfort usually misunderstood as progress, welfare or luxury.”

A Definitive List of the Best #BottleCapChallenge Responses

A continually updating list of the best #bottlecapchallenge responses

It all started with a Taekwondo champion in Almaty, Kazakhstan. An expertly executed spinning kick posted on Instagram that resulted in the cap of a water bottle spinning off. With it, a challenge into the social media ether, tagging some of the world’s best known action stars and fighters.

An unlikely response from a well-known fashion designer got the ball rolling and #bottlecapchallenge was officially born.

Errolson tagged his friend, UFC fighter Max Holloway, who responded with what I believe to still be the best to date (it stayed on the bottle!) and well, here we are making a definitive (and continually updating) list of the best #bottlecapchallenge responses.

If you we missed an awesome response, please let us know in the comments so we can update this post!
