The Story of the Free Kick Freak

cristiano-ronaldo-ball-flying-at-head

Cristiano Ronaldo is the definition of a ‘triple threat’. He can’t act, sing or dance, but dammit he can shoot, dribble and pass! He also has a freakish knack for free kicks; the best I’ve ever witnessed. Love him or loathe him (England stand up?) you can’t deny his abilities. His list of accomplishments sound made up and I question whether he’s actually human or some kind alien from the planet Futbolia. Check out the little highlight reel I put together last night:

Full name: Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro
Date of birth: February 5, 1985 (age 25)
Place of birth: Funchal, Madeira, Portugal
Height: 1.86 m (6 ft 1 in)
Playing position: Winger/Forward
Current club: Real Madrid

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE FIELD OF EXCELLENCE

– The most expensive player in football history after having transferred to Real Madrid from Manchester United in a deal worth $132m usd
– His contract with Real Madrid is believed to have made him the highest-paid football player in the world
– In 2008, Ronaldo won his first UEFA Champions League title, and was named player of the tournament
– He was named the FIFPro World Player of the Year and the FIFA World Player of the Year, in addition to becoming Manchester United’s first Ballon d’Or winner in 40 years
– Ronaldo became Manchester United’s first-ever Portuguese player when he signed for $19.13m usd after the 2002–03 season.

CAREER STATISTICS AS OF JANUARY 10, 2010

cristiano-ronaldo-career-statistics-as-of-jan-10-2010

RANDOM

– His second given name, “Ronaldo”, was chosen after then-U.S. president Ronald Reagan, who was his father’s favourite actor
– When he was 15, Ronaldo was diagnosed with a racing heart, a condition that might have forced him to give up playing football. He had an operation in which a laser was used to cauterize the area of his heart that was causing the problem

RIP EDDIE AIKAU

eddie-2009-highlight

Quicksilver’s Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau aka ‘The Eddie’ is named for the North Shore’s first lifeguard and legendary surfer, who was lost at sea in 1978. It’s one of the most rare, exclusive surfing contests in the world, occurring only when the waves in Oahu’s Waimea Bay exceed 30 feet high. Because of the stringent criteria, the event has only been held 8 times in 25 years, and the last was in 2004.
