An Ongoing Photo Series Dedicated to the Beautiful Designs of Organ Pipes
In an ongoing series entitled ‘Pipes‘, Munich-based photographer Robert Götzfried documents the beautiful and diverse designs of organ pipes. On Behance, Götzfried adds:

“For me it is the most amazing experience to shoot these places. I go there when nobody is around. You can still smell the incense in the air, you kind of still hear the bombastic sound of the organ but it’s all quiet. Every step echoes and you automatically get very calm yourself. Every little sound feels like eternal noise. Can you feel the silence? I shot these organs in Southern Germany, Bavaria. Most of them are placed in catholic churches.”

Götzfried has shared about 36 photos of organ pipes in two albums entitled Pipes and Pipes II. You can find some of our favourites below but be sure to see more of his work at the links listed as you will find many more fascinating photo projects.

How Every Mumford, Alt-J and Chainsmokers Song is Written

With immense fame comes inevitable parody

With immense fame comes inevitable parody. Pop artists Mumford & Sons, Alt-J and The Chainsmokers are often lauded and derided for their hit songs and in the three funny videos below, people explain how to create songs in the style of the artists above.

While the Alt-J and Mumford vids have been around for a few years, the Chainsmokers parody was a recent viral sensation and prompted this compilation post. Enjoy!

If you find yourself in Lyon, France look out for a disco ball concrete mixer playing party music and inviting pedestrians to let loose if only for a fleeting moment. The playful installation was created by French artist Benedetto Bufalino, who even created a Facebook event inviting people to come dance on December 8 at Rue Président Carnot, 69002 in Lyon.

Musician Plays Piano in the Middle of the Arctic as Calving Glaciers Crash Behind Him

Acclaimed composer Ludovico Einaudi performs on a grand piano on a floating platform in front of the Wahlenbergbreen glacier

Acclaimed Italian composer and pianist Ludovico Einaudi performs one of his own compositions on a floating platform in the Arctic Ocean, in front of the Wahlenbergbreen glacier in Svalbard, Norway.

The composition, Elegy for the Arctic, was inspired by eight million voices from around the world calling for Arctic protection. You can watch the stirring performance in the embedded video below.

Elegy for the Arctic by Ludovico Einaudi

The musician, known for his composition for the film, “Black Swan” and the television serial, “Doctor Zhivago”, travelled onboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise on the eve of the week-long meeting of the OSPAR Commission (June 20-24), which could secure the first protected area in Arctic international waters.

The 2.6 x 10 meter artificial iceberg platform was made from more than 300 triangles of wood attached together and weighed a total of nearly two tonnes. A grand piano was then placed on top of the platform for Einaudi’s incredible performance.

“Being here has been a great experience. I could see the purity and fragility of this area with my own eyes and interpret a song I wrote to be played upon the best stage in the world. It is important that we understand the importance of the Arctic, stop the process of destruction and protect it.” – Ludovico Einaudi

Picture of the Day: When Def Leppard Met the Deaf Leopards

Since 1941, the Arkansas School for the Deaf’s mascot and team name has been, ‘The Leopards’

Since 1941, the Arkansas School for the Deaf’s mascot and team name has been ‘The Leopards’. That’s right, the Deaf Leopards.

So when word got out that Def Leppard—who are currently on tour with REO Speedwagon and Tesla—would be coming through Little Rock, Arkansas, a petition was created to have the band meet some of the students.

1,500 signatures later and students from the school got to meet the legendary rockers backstage at the May 11 concert and they even brought a replica scoreboard! The band later tweeted out the photo above.

For those interested, you can find a full list of upcoming tour dates at Def Leppard’s official site.

Candid Photos from the Time the Beatles Played to a Crowd of 18 People

Every artist was first an amateur. Even The Beatles

The date was December 9, 1961. Having packed bars and clubs in Liverpool, the group made the 9 hour journey south to the Palais Ballroom in Aldershot, Hampshire. Their manager, Sam Leach was hoping the gigs would catch the attention of London music executives and get the band their big break.

Unfortunately Leach did not realize that Aldershot was a military town some 65 km outside London. He also didn’t realize that the ad he paid to have placed in the local newspaper was never published. So when Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Pete Best showed up, nobody was there to welcome the lads from Liverpool.

The band did put on a show for the 18 guests in attendance, and made the best of a disappointing evening with dancing, drinks and jokes with mates.

“Halfway through one number, George and Paul put on their overcoats and took to the floor to dance a foxtrot together, while the rest of us struggled along, making enough music for them and the handful of spectators. We clowned our way through the whole of the second half. John and Paul deliberately played wrong chords and notes and added words to the songs that were never in the original lyrics.” – Pete Best

“You can imagine what it was like for the Beatles with about four people dancing and six miserable faces standing around the edge looking on. They did their best, but it was no use. They packed up at about 9:30 pm. Then Sam produced the beer, and the bingo balls started getting kicked around the floor: Liverpool versus Aldershot.” – Terry McCann
